I noticed that Funbikerchick mentioned her maternal grandmother had French Canadian roots. If that's true then she should be able to trace the family back to when they arrived in Quebec . Many families go back to the 1680's when there was a Canadian version of the Great Migration.
Tanguay and Eloi- Gerard are two genealogists who have publications tracing people back to France.
