Smoking On Screen

EDITORIAL: KEEP AN EYE ON HOLLYWOOD

As with most things Hollywood, it's a glittery idea, but America will have to wait to see just how much substance it holds. We're talking about the decision of the Motion Picture Association of America to consider smoking on screen as a factor in giving a film an `R` rating.

Screen Smoking

I think this is a good idea. Cigarette smoking should be considered as drug use or harmful behavior because it is someone hurting themselves without caring. Something needs to be done to help people understand that smoking is bad and should not be accepted.

Smoking On Screen Health & Special Psychology

While just off-the-cuff, I mentally agree with Sahara above, I think at least there should be a maximum of times smoking should be seen or something - there IS still a ban on US commercials for tobacco products, and while you can't say THAT is going on, I do feel it encourages smoking, of which I am no fan - my whole family used to and still does smoke.

I've seen a lot of smokers' justifications for complaints against people that don't like smoking, griping about having to go outside of buildings or restaurants or feel like they're treated like second class citizens, etc. In NO other fashion is carrying a flammable and burning object, especially one giving off noxious smoke, tolerated in any typical building, commercial or private. I could walk into a smoker's house carrying an incense burner and pack of incense and a lit stick, or a sparkler, and sit down and start to engage them in conversation, and I'm almost certain they'd think that was fairly poor form.

Second hand smoke is my primary gripe, really, though I mentally associate smoking with the death of both of my parents in a vague fashion, I myself have trouble with breathing the smoke, I choke and my eyes burn, I get a headache, my nose hurts, etc. That is pure physical reaction and something I can't help, but anyone else being around something that does that to them doesn't appreciate it being present everywhere they are. That's not even to mention the health aspect and near total disregard of smokers for other people.

Lastly, except for my own friends and family, I honestly couldn't care if people are harming themselves by smoking, that is their choice and they're not seeking any help for it, so that's their burden. I don't care if anyone dips or whatever around me, except the cups are gross and sometimes get knocked over or left at my house, but otherwise, again, that is their choice and it's not going up my nose (except the aroma but it's just mint which I think most people have no problem with), so I had two friends, one smoked and the other dipped/chewed, one I asked to go outside, the other I just asked to be careful with his cup - to some this might have seemed a double standard but it isn't about being "fair", it is about one's own sense of being forced to endure something unpleasant for no reason other than someone else likes it or is addicted to it - that just isn't going to fly with me.

Screen Smoking

Having an R-rating just because someone smokes on the screen is ridiculous. Should we also make smokers who smoke outside be arrested for 'exposure'? I'm not a smoker nor do I like smoking like the guy above me ranted but at the same time silly is just plain silly.
