Genealogy, the study of one's family history, is fast becoming one of
the most popular pastimes in America. And Alaska's Kenai Peninsula is
no exception. The area has its own nonprofit organization dedicated to the
pursuit of family histories: the Totem Tracers Genealogical Society. The
group works out of the Kenai Community Library and in cooperation with
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' family history center in
Soldotna.
It was interesting reading that article, because someone mentioned that it was difficult to trace their genealogy because of their African-American background, and because of the slave history in America. That is how I sometimes feel about tracing my background because I was basically a couple of generations down from indentured East Indian laborers. There are a lot of tips and tricks offered in the article so I will have to keep those in mind and maybe one day I will make the effort to trace my roots.
I am located in Alaska, about an hour outside of Anchorage. If you have ancestors from here and want a picture of a grave or copy of a record--post it and I can see what I can do to help!
