Sometimes I wonder how far the stupidity of some teachers can reach. What were they thinking?

Staff members of a Murfreesboro elementary school staged a fake gunman attack during a school trip, telling them it was not a drill as children cried and hid under tables. Parents of the sixth-grade students at Scales Elementary were outraged after learning about the prank that occurred Thursday night during a weeklong trip to a state park. Assistant Principal Don Bartch, who was present, said the scenario was intended as a learning experience and only lasted five minutes. "We got together and discussed what we would have done in a real situation," he said. During the last night of the school trip to Fall Creek Falls, a state park about 130 miles southeast of Nashville, staff members convinced the 69 students that there was a gunman on the loose. The students were told to lie on the floor or hide underneath tables and stay quiet. After the lights went out, about 20 kids started to cry, said 11-year-old Shay Naylor... |
I have high respect for people of the education profession. They have been some of the finest people I have ever met...however, there are a few and for some reasons they typically find themselves in positions of power that lack a certain common sense compass.
If a parent elects to test the school with a fake bomb threat or walks into the school and fakes a take over of the school...just to see how they would respond, they would be in jail. Pretty much no questions asked...jail. A few educators get together on something that is supposed to be a memorable experience for the children and screw it up.
What was going through their minds? Hey, I got a great idea. Kids always have fond memories of their class trips...why dont we ruin it for them! Why don't we scare the life out of them and make some of them cry...it will be good learning for us about what we would do with hysterical children! Excellent...now I know why you are the assistant principal...you have all the good ideas! It was only 5 minutes of terror for the kids..they got their whole lives ahead of them...no problems! Why is it I am waiting for the following statement from the group of educators: We did have a 2 day terror camp planned but we thought that was in bad taste or might permanently scar the children, plus we would have had to get parental approval for that one.
As far as I am concerned, if that school has corporal punishment (and I would hope they do, because this would be a great reward), that each of the camping six grade students gets to give one spanking to each of the participating educators. Either that or the entire faculty gets detention for a semester...have the janitors watch them on the weekends for double time and a half pay.
