Obtaining Permanent Residency In Canada

Every year, thousands of people migrate to Canada through different avenues. This thread will focus on immigration to Canada through Employment. Feel free to ask any questions or add your comments.

Canada welcomes immigrants coming to their country, as a matter of fact the low birth factor and the age factor is what makes Canada look for immigrants around the world for their work force. There are two ways you can apply for Permanent Residency, out or inside Canada.

If you choose to stay in your home country and apply, you need a permanent job offer from a Canadian company willing to sponsor you. A job offer is sent to you for your consideration and when you sign it, then the job offer is sent to Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) who evaluates the impact this job offer will have in the economy of Canada. Once HRSDC approves it, then you can apply for your visa at your local Canadian Embassy. The whole process depending where you are from, is around 3 years...maybe shorter if you are lucky.

If you choose to apply for permanent residency inside Canada, then you need to get a work permit first (they are usually given by a period of one year and they are renewable) up to three years. If your employer is happy with your work, he can offer you a full time position then you apply to the Provincial Denomination Program (each province has its own program and requirements). They are the ones who grant you Permanent Residency in Canada through Immigration. This is just ONE of the programs available. Your Permanent Residency should be ready before your three year time is up. You can apply for a work permit and permanent residency at the same time, it is what is called dual intent and it's fine with Canadian laws.

Once you have lived legally in Canada for a period of three years, you are entitled to apply for Canadian Citizenship.
