The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging consumers to replace their smoke alarm and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm batteries this Sunday as clocks are turned ahead for Daylight Saving Time.

Yes this is something I have been doing after my father taught me how to change the batteries in the smoke detectors. I have shown my boys that the smoke detectors and the CO2 detectors need their batteries changed every spring at day light savings time. This way we know that we are well protected. We also test the detectors one per month.
I decided this is good to look into and many Co2 sensors have to be replaced every two years! Just the sensor not the whole unit. Might be best to look up the unit you have and see what the manufacturer says. Also you should vacuum them out semi annually.
To be honest yes it does. If the heat exchanger cracks your level of co can jump fast. They are not very expensive either. I have been thinking on a gas detector as well.
Because the furnace is running the co mixes with the air being distributed and hits all levels at once.
