Tonight on 'Nightline' - AUTOBAHN SLOWDOWN
The autobahn in Germany has always been a place for people to take their fast cars and test their limits, because for many years, there were no limits. Adolf Hitler built the first autobahns to help move his army out of Germany and across Europe. Since then, the superhighways that criss-cross the country have been filled with some of the world's fastest cars. But speeds on the highways regularly top 130 miles per hour, and accidents are on the rise as more commercial trucks fill the highways. German officials have finally come to the conclusion that some speed limits are in fact necessary. Nick Watt went to Germany to see how they're doing it.
I've only ever once been on the German Autobahns, and that was enough for me!
The speed that some people drive their cars at is pretty scary, especially as you have no control on how safely they are driving next to you or behind you.
Having said that, their routes are very direct, and they're a very quick way of accessing different areas of the country.
