Too Little Sunscreen Equals Child Abuse

international QUOTE
N.J. Father did not use enough sunblock on disabled boyThe Associated Press
Updated: 2:04 p.m. ET May 26, 2004CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. - A man was charged with child abuse for not applying enough sunblock to his mentally disabled 12-year-old for a day at the beach, leaving the boy with severe burns, authorities said.

Walter McKelvie Jr., 43, of Vineland was indicted Tuesday and charged with one count of child abuse and neglect. Authorities were alerted by the boy's mother, who has custody of the child but was not with him at the beach, prosecutor Meghan Hoerner said.

She took the boy to the hospital, then reported the July 20 incident to authorities. The son, identified only as R.M., suffered large, bleeding blisters on his back and face.

McKelvie told investigators he put sunblock on the boy, but the indictment said he failed 'to apply enough sunscreen causing severe sunburn to R.M." while he had custody of him.

If convicted, McKelvie could face up to 18 months in prison.

A call to McKelvie's home was not immediately returned Wednesday.

I don't know what to say or how I feel about this. If this is the first time something like this has happened and the father hasn't had other situations where he has neglected his child, I think everyone would be better served by educating him than by trying to punish him. No parent is perfect. We all make mistakes. Our children suffer because of them. However, I think intent needs to be considered. Was the father truly negligent in the sense he could tell the kid was burning and he just didn't care? If so, then fine. However, I have had several very bad burns myself! I was burning up, and I couldn't tell until after I got out of the sun. This sounds more like an issue between ex spouses to me. I think an investigation should have been made by social services to decide if there was criminal negligence with intent to harm before charges were filed.

This was very unfortunate, and its seems because the child was disabled he could not notify his father of the sunburns if he could feel it. I would think that for a sunburn to become the bleeding kind would require some very excessive sunlight and would also be quite noticeable. That makes me worry about negligence and, like you mentioned tenaheff, maybe revenge becoming a factor. It is very possible that the father thought he could get back at the ex by harming the child she cared very much for. If this is the case, then he needs to be punished severely.

Well, I have found that even severe sunburns aren't noticeable in most cases until after you get out of the sun. The blisters appear later, not while you are actually in the sun. This is why many people end up severely burned each year. Not because they are trying to get burned, but because they don't realize it is happening.

Something that most people do not realize either is just because it is a cloudy day does not mean you cannot be sun burned. Some think that it takes only direct sunlight and thus people get burned. Children should always have a hat on and sunblock with UV protection according to their skin type - in other words not just any old sun block.

SEPARATING SUNSCREEN FACT FROM FICTION

Next time you're scanning the aisles for your summer sun protection, consider that producers of five well-known sunscreen brands are facing a class action lawsuit alleging that their claims mislead consumers about their products' ability to ward off UV rays and prevent skin damage and cancer.
