With the advancement of technology everything has become smaller: computers, phones and of course dishes with DirectTV Dish being an example. Due to these innovations in technology there are huge dishes left desolate in many people's homes / businesses. Some of them gather moss and vines... remember those days? Do you still see old time dishes where you live?

I used to pick up signals from a neighbor's dish using a normal TV and turning the channel to an odd number, because it was so big.

I haven't seen one of those in years. The building next door to ours has a big satellite dish on the roof, not as big as the old style, but I think they actually are using it.

My dads neighbor still had a big one he says why replace it it still works just fine! Keep in mind a small lot there is one acre!

I agree with him for large areas where land is accessible it is not needed, but it definitely is an obstruction on smaller lots. What is more is it does attract a lot of attention, but if those are not of any concern to you then keep the thing.

What is bad is the ones that are left like relics with vines growing over it and rust tarnishing the original color.

Yes in the country side they are common to see sitting there. Silly part is any scrap yard would take them for the material.

It is likely that the cost of scrapping it and transporting to a scrap yard may not be worth the return you get for your expense or time, hence they are just left there.
