Comments: Really? That's not what Richard Bushman said:
QUOTE |
Despite the effort that went into the translation, Joseph Smith did not make the book the foundation of the church. (Richard L. Bushman) |
BOMC.
Mr. Bushman said the Book of Mormon was not the foundation, but he never said it wasn't the Keystone, two distinctly different parts of an architectural structure.
I would argue that Faith in Jesus Christ is the Foundation of our Church, whereas the Book of Mormon is a fundamental part of the testimony of the Divinity and role of Jesus Christ (Keystone).
The Book of Mormon is a fundamental part of the Church's Doctrine on the atonement and it has every right to protect the intellectual as well as spiritual integrity of the book.

Please refrain from telling the LDS Church what there holy writ should be. Obviously you do not believe in its precepts, so you do not have a say in what their Doctrine should be.
Historically speaking Joseph Smith did have commands to set up his Church and did Publish the Book of Mormon. Any release of this copy right should be under the direction of that Church and not be based on outside influences.
Rather off topic, but... BOMC Not that you will believe this, but in the Doctrine and Covenants 20 1-3 it clearly states that Joseph Smith organized the Church by the "will and Commandment of the Lord"
Richard Bushman is a LDS Historian, and not a final say on LDS Theology and Doctrine. All that he states is his opinion and should be treated as such. |
It's obvious that this group has an agenda. One problem I see happening in our church is that we focus on JUST the Book of Mormon, think of President Gordon B. Hinckley's challenge to read the Book of Mormon, he said nothing about reading any of the other scriptures, just the Book of Mormon. At church, someone said that he was reading the Old Testament, but stopped reading it, to read the Book of Mormon, I think that is wrong, I feel that during personal study, you should study from all the scriptures, you CAN'T understand the newer scriptures without an understanding of the older scriptures, you can't understand the New Testament without first reading, and understanding the Old Testament, you can't understand the Book of Mormon, without understanding the WHOLE Bible, this goes for the Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price, and the General Conference talks, all the new scriptures ether directly quote from older scriptures, or vaguely use symbolism.
