Full Harmony With The Spirit
"Spiritual guidance in large measure depends upon being in harmony with the President of the Church, the First Presidency, and the Quorum of the Twelve--all of whom are sustained . . . as prophets, seers, and revelators. I do not know how we can expect to be in full harmony with the Spirit of the Lord if we are not in harmony with the President of the Church and the other prophets, seers, and revelators."
(James E. Faust, "Called and Chosen," Ensign, Nov. 2005, 53)
This is a very complex statement to digest. I think we need to clarify that as Latter-Day Saints we are not supposed to follow our leaders blindly but need to pray about it and get confirmation from the Lord. This is what Pres. Joseph F. Smith suggested and he was very right. Now, if what the Prophets and the Apostles say goes according to the Standard Works then yes but if what they are stating is their opinion then I am not bound and I don't think my spirituality will be based on their opinions in a particular subject.
Rather off topic, but... I recently added a news release from the Church concerning what constitutes official doctrine: https://www.bordeglobal.com/foruminv/index....topic=8342&st=0 |
This is a very dangerous doctrine which actually thwarts the plan of exaltation. This is an easy one to believe because surely the prophet will never lead us astray, right? Well, if he or anyone is telling us to place our eternal salvation or exaltation on any man or set of men, then they are leading you astray. The scriptures repetitively tell us NOT to rely on the "arm of Flesh". The reason it says "Flesh" is because it mean flesh of any type, including Flesh and Bone as in God himself. Instead, the scriptures tell us to rely on the "Spirit" which has no flesh or bone. The ultimate difference is that the spirit comes from within and so we learn to rely on our own judgment of right and wrong from our own inspiration and revelation. This is the rock on which if we build we "Cannot fall"! If we cannot fall, then we have met the criteria for receiving Calling and Election made sure which is the promise of exaltation. If we rely on others/Flesh to guide us to truth, then we are not built on the rock and will remain unable to be exalted.

"There are those among this people who are influenced, controlled, and biased in their thoughts, actions, and feelings by some other individual or family, on whom they place their dependence for spiritual and temporal instruction, and for salvation in the end. These persons do not depend upon themselves for salvation, but upon another of their poor, weak, fellow mortals. I do not depend upon any inherent goodness of my own, say they, to introduce me into the kingdom of glory, but I depend upon you, brother Joseph, upon you, brother Brigham, upon you, brother Heber, or upon you, brother James; I believe your judgment is superior to mine, and consequently I let you judge for me; your spirit is better than mine, therefore you can do good for me; I will submit myself wholly to you, and place in you all my confidence for life and salvation; where you go I will go, and where you tarry there I will stay; expecting that you will introduce me through the gates into the heavenly Jerusalem....Now those men, or those women, who know no more about the power of God, and the influences of the Holy Spirit, than to be led entirely by another person, suspending their own understanding, and pinning their faith upon another's sleeve, will never be capable of entering into the celestial glory, to be crowned as they anticipate; they will never be capable of becoming Gods. They cannot rule themselves, to say nothing of ruling others, but they must be dictated to in every trifle, like a child. They cannot control themselves in the least, but James, Peter, or somebody else must control them, They never can become Gods, nor be crowned as rulers with glory, immortality, and eternal lives. They never can hold scepters of glory, majesty, and power in the celestial kingdom. Who will? Those who are valiant and inspired with the true independence of heaven, who will go forth boldly in the service of their God, leaving others to do as they please, determined to do right, though all mankind besides should take the opposite course." QUOTE |
"We have heard men who hold the priesthood remark, that they would do anything that they were told to do by those who preside over them, if they knew it was wrong: but such obedience is worse than folly to us; it is slavery in the extreme; and the man who would thus willingly degrade himself, should not claim rank among intelligent beings, until he turns from his folly. A man of God...would despise the idea. Others in the extreme exercise of their almighty authority have taught that such obedience was necessary, and that no matter what the saints were told to do by their presidents, they should do it without asking any questions. When Elders of Israel will so far indulge in these extreme notions of obedience as to teach them to the people, it is generally because they have it in their minds to do wrong themselves." (Apostle Samuel Richards on Nov. 13, 1852, recorded in the Millennial Star, 14:393-395) |
QUOTE |
"President Joseph Smith read the 14th chapter of Ezekiel --- said the Lord had declared by the Prophet, that the people should each one stand for himself, and depend on no man or men in that state of corruption of the Jewish church --- that righteous persons could only deliver their own souls --- applied it to the present state of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ---said if the people departed from the Lord, they must fall --- that they were depending on the Prophet, hence were darkened in their minds." (Description of Joseph Smiths teachings to the Relief Society, found in the Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 237-238) |
QUOTE |
"Do not brethren, put your trust in man though he be a bishop, an apostle, or a president. If you do, they will fail you at some time or place; they will do wrong or seem to, and your support is gone; but if we lean on God, He never will fail us. When men and women depend on God alone, and trust in Him alone, their faith will not be shaken if the highest in the Church should step aside. Perhaps it is His own design that faults and weaknesses should appear in high places in order that His Saints may learn to trust in Him, and not in any man or men. (George Q. Cannon, Millennial Star, 53:674-74) |
QUOTE |
"81 There is not any person belonging to the church who is exempt from this council of the church. 82 And inasmuch as a President of the High Priesthood shall transgress, he shall be had in remembrance before the common council of the church, who shall be assisted by twelve counselors of the High Priesthood;" D&C 107:81-82) |
QUOTE |
"34 O Lord, I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee forever. I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh; for I know that cursed is he that putteth his trust in the arm of flesh. Yea, cursed is he that putteth his trust in man or maketh flesh his arm. 35 Yea, I know that God will give liberally to him that asketh. Yea, my God will give me, if I ask not amiss; therefore I will lift up my voice unto thee; yea, I will cry unto thee, my God, the rock of my righteousness. Behold, my voice shall forever ascend up unto thee, my rock and mine everlasting God." (2Nephi 4:34-35) |

10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. - Luke 12:10 |

D&C 11: 12 12 And now, verily, verily, I say unto thee, put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good-yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously; and this is my Spirit. |
I am sorry, but I have to lock this Thread. Yes, I know... you have good points, but because of the direction it is heading this Topic is for the Mature LDS Board only where there is already in depth Discussion on it: The Prophet Said So Is That Enough?
