I was reading the topic above about how expensive genealogy can be. It's true. If you hire a professional in Ireland , England or even Newfoundland it can cost you $20. per hour.
A less expensive way to research would be to go to your local LDS family history centre and use their resources. They have Ancestry.com on their computers which give you an index and online access to census, records. I have also found WWI draft records and a number of other great items online.
You can also check their libraries and microfilms. Most centres have church records in their permanent collections from all over the world.
If you find some information that you ancestors were living in another state you can go to RAOGK Random Acts of Genealgocial Kindness and ask a local person to photograph a gravestone or look up an obiturary for you. Some libraries will also do this for you for free. They might charge 50 cents for a photocopy.
The best and least expensive method of finding family history info is to ask an elderly relative. Start with questions about their home, number of bedrooms, favourite meals and Christmas traditions. This will get them thinking about the past and they often remember more than you ever thought they would.
Be sure to write down everything and put a date and location where the conversation took place.
Remember that what you re doing might cost you a few dollars but the information you gather can be priceless to your family.
Good luck and good hunting
