What do you people think about having male teachers in girls schools. I am refering to primary school as I have heard that male teachers are allowed to teach secondary schools that only have girls in it. I think that law is outdated (as most of our laws are) and it is very sexist. I know of the obvious reason but I would like to hear some constructive critics on this. I look forward to discussions on this.
I was not aware that male teachers were not allowed to teach in primary schools here in Trinidad. I completly understand the reasoning maybe behind it, there are way too many sickos out there (that include women too!). Even though it seems sexist, it can be seen as a way to protect the male teacher from being wrongly accused of some sort of crime in an all girl schools.
In my experience, I have seen male teachers behaving inappropriately with girls in the secondary level and I did not feel comfortable about that at all, so I am not really keen about certainmale teachers who may have some issues teaching young little girls. I would also believe the male teacher would want to stay away from an all girls school knowing how the world has become these days. I would definitly raise an eyebrow if a male teacher INSIST in teaching in an all girl Primary school.
LDS with all due respect, that is exactly why I think the law sexist and should be updated. Now I am not insisting on teaching in an all girl school, I am saying that the law contradicts itself all over the place. Male teachers are allowed to teach in mixed schools, so it stands that there will be girls there not so? Yes there are sickos out there, but as I said in another post. Why are we punishing all male teachers because some sick ones will interfere with the girls. As you also said the male teachers are at the all girl secondary schools (the mixed ones to obviously), where we have girls who are older and more developed. So it is ok to send the guys there but not at the younger stages? If we follow that law then the guys should not be at any school that has girls in it. By the way, did you guys know that if a male teacher is having a school outing and at least one girl is going, the law states that a female teacher MUST be present at that outing too. I look forward to further discussions.
P.S. Thanks LDS_forever for your responses.

Rather off topic, but... I think we all remember the case of an school female employee interfering with a girl during lunch break, I haven't heard any updates on this story but this also proves there are lots of female sickos out there as well. |
A lot of our laws (not just some) should be updated to reflect these times. A lot of these laws were implemented when we became independent in 1962, with a few amendments here and there. This is why Trinidad has a break down in moral values now. These laws may have worked then but times have changed and so has the people. A lot of older people would say for the worse. Anyway I am straying a bit. As I said earlier I am not insisting on teaching at an all girls school but I do see the benifts of it and I think Trinidad should consider it. A lot of these girls do not have a male role model (positive or none) at home and I think having one in school at least may help in that department. This is just one benfit of it, there are more. By the way I am not sure but are male security guards put in all girl schools or is it that they only have female guards? I would really like an answer to this as I cannot say for sure either way. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks for your discussions
Exposure for strong males in an all girl primary school is positive. We are unable to totally control the behaviour of males OR females who take advantage of young people. We would therefore need to have strong administrators in the female schools to manage any adverse or inappropriate behaviour by our males.
It's impossible to imagine that these laws are still in existence though.

Comments: But if the male teacher gets accused of doing anything (it might not even be true), then they will lose their career, reputations, etc. So maybe it is safer for them this way?
LY that's a good point. I'm not sure. I prefer female teachers because I can relate better to them and when the male teachers are too young, girls tend to get distracted.
