Common birds declining around U.S
WASHINGTON - The populations of 20 common American birds from the fence-sitting meadowlark to the whippoorwill with its haunting call - are half what they were 40 years ago, according to an analysis released Thursday.

It's really not surprising when you think of the increase in population and the spread of "civilization" throughout the country. Not surprising, but not something to ignore, either. It's rather scary, particularly when you think that the USA is only 230 years old.
