Sleep With Contact Lenses?

Can you sleep safely while wearing your Contact Lenses and not damage your eyes?

I have heard that there is an extended contact lenses that can be used for sleeping, but I doubt I would use it, because it is bound to have some kind of adverse effect on the regeneration of the eye. I have fallen asleep with my contacts on and did not wake up blind, but my eyes felt stressed afterward.
