Can you sew?

Sewing seems like the 'woman' thing to do, but when it comes to making suits they always seem to look for the men - isn't that strange?

What are your thoughts on sewing? Should every woman know how to do it? Do you have special tips?

JB you sexist you! smile.gif-->rolleyes.gif Why not ask should every person know how to do it? Why just should every woman know how to do it? What if you don't have a wife or something happens to her and she can't sew?

Now, no, I don't sew. If a button needs to be replaced, it is time for a new shirt. biggrin.gif

I like philosophy on the new shirts Tenahaff.

Sadly, as a guy. I would say i know how to do the basic sewing. I learned how when i was in scouts as a kid. I still remember it, I also know how to tie knots fairly well.

I don't think so. Tailoring is an old, time-honored tradition among men. Now, why men are known as "tailors" and women are known as "seamstresses" is a mystery I might have to look up...

I agree with tena here smile.gif Also, I think it is important for everyone to learn at least some basic sewing skills as far as mending, darning, hemming, etc. Who knows how long our great abundance will be available to have "disposable" shirts?

Personally, I love to sew biggrin.gif I just made two new dresses for work. I shop the bargain tables and get the good stuff on sale (not the cheap stuff cheaper) -- I'm not always sure what I will use it for, I just know a good deal when I see it. So those two *nice* dresses cost less than $5 each.

Two tips: #1- When you find a pattern that you like, make it more sturdy either by ironing on a backing of pellon or other light interfacing, or cut the pattern out using a heavy paper. That way it will last a lot longer even with a lot of use. And #2- You can find great deals on fabric, patterns, and "notions" at estate sales and garage sales/yard sales. I have a box of zippers of all different sizes and colors I've bought over the years at private sales -- saves me lots!

I think it is great that you can do this. I used to know a women who could sew just about anything and you couldn't tell it hadn't been bought in a store. She even used to make blue jeans for her kids. I envy that talent!

Can you sew?

I know how to replace a button. I own a pack of sewing needles and a few spools of different colored threads. That's about the extent of it. If pants need hemmed, I would much rather pay $5 at the local cleaners where they do sewing than do it myself, since doing a single hem would probably take me about two hours. I know enough about sewing to know that a pants hem should take about five minutes if you know how to do it. So I would be working at about 4% of the speed of someone with training.

Fortunately I almost never have to sew. Having a button pop off is the only problem I ever need to correct. I have all my pants hemmed when I buy them. Att he moment I have one tear - its in a "change pocket" of a pair of denims, and it can't be fixed as far as I know because it didn't tear at the seam. I could join the two edges of the tear together, but its really not worth the time and effort. I'm the only person who knows its there, since its inside my pocket.

I did not see the replies to this thread until LDS_forever was looking through it and brought it to my attention. I would like to point out some things:

1. The title of the thread is: Can you sew?
2. In no part of my opening post did I ever claim that women should be doing sewing and not men. If you look at it closely I am only asking questions:
- Sewing seems like the 'woman' thing to do, but when it comes to making suits they always seem to look for the men - isn't that strange?
- What are your thoughts on sewing?
- Should every woman know how to do it?
- Do you have special tips?
If you examine any of my other posts you will notice that I usually ask questions only, but never share my view in the first post.
3. You cannot hold me accountable for he world already having a stigma in its mind concerning women and sewing, indeed it was my point to show that men are quite capable of the art form as well.
4. Always keep in mind that what may be tradition in your country or relevant in your country may not be relevant in another.
5. This post was to insight posting, which it has done, I am not interested in the topic at all, but I have only returned to reply to neutralize an over exaggerated attempt to pin me down as a sexist.
