Forgiveness in Islam

Is there any kind of forgiveness in Islam or is it all about revenge and bloodshed for everything someone does wrong or seemingly wrong?

In my opinion it seems that Islam of today takes an 'Old Testament' approach or 'letter of the law' dictate with regards to how it handles the mistakes or so called mistakes that people make. Is there Forgiveness in Islam?

Based on my little reading, there is forgiveness in Islam but there are certain sins that are not forgiven and that they deserve death such is the case of Apostasy.
