Female Teachers At Male Schools

What are the experiences of females in male schools. Do you have different experiences from the boys (Secondary)?
I think the boys automatically give respect to the men and challenge the women teachers at all turns. We have to work twice as hard top manage classes of teenage boys.

I think in this situation you have to do double duty in earning the respect of the young men. I have been the student in this case and really never thought much about it as most times you see a lot of female teachers anyway. My wife has been in male dominated classrooms too, so she could probably express her feelings about this.

I taught in a school where was dominated by boys (maybe 3 or 4 girls out of a group of 25). It was extremely difficult in the beginning and quite stressful until I got the hand of it and learned how to deal with these challenges.

I did learn though:

1. It is a cultural issue. Most boys I personally taught come from a single parents home where their mothers (whom I personally met) defend their children's behavior to an extreme. The kids are not performing at school, yet they get the latest shoes, cel phones and are allowed to do many things. Hence they see women =weak.

2. Those who do have fathers, see them as the ONLY ones worth of respecting because the father is usually the breadwinner as well as the person who disciplines. They do not respect their mothers in the same way. Hence, they associate male teachers with fathers and female teachers with mothers.

When I read this thread, I remembered this incident which occurred in a prominent all boys secondary school. According to my friend, the school recruited a very young, qualified and attractive female teacher. All the boys were practically drooling over her. They made a bet amongst themselves concerning who could be bold enough to touch her. When my friend told me what they did, I was disgusted and very disappointed. While she was walking in the corridor, a boy deliberately bumped into her and of course, took full advantage of the situation. Being a young and inexperienced teacher, she giggled nervously and picked up her documents which fell on the ground. Someone approached her from behind and mentioned that she had chalk on her skirt and he took it upon himself to "dust her off" by slowly brushing his hand up and down her posterior. Naturally, the teacher left the school after working there for only one month.

I think that it is important to note that this teacher was very young, petite, inexperienced and nonplussed by the entire situation. Ironically, she was the victim of sexual harassment here and yet, she chose to leave her job since she did not want to cause any problems. The boys took full advantage of her because they were aware that she was new, inexperienced and would be overwhelmed by their aggressive behaviour. Mind you, this incident took place over two decades ago!

This may sound bad, but good looking teachers need to be kept in the all girl schools. Keep the real big bad bully types that look like someone's mommy in the all boy schools - most boys love that.
