Nintendo Wii takes a murderous turn
In a video game universe, the pairings do not get much stranger than this: family-friendly Nintendo and controversial video game developer Rockstar. The horror title Manhunt 2 ($30-$40) will hit stores on Halloween for Nintendo Wii and Sony's PlayStation 2. Since the Wii version uses the motion-sensitive controllers, it literally gives players the hands of a killer. Manhunt 2 was originally rated Adults Only - equivalent to an X in films - and now carries an M for mature audiences (17 and up).

The Early Show brought on Dr. Phil to Discuss this game. One of the reviewers for it said that some parts go as far as showing torture where the player character takes a pliers and rips off the genitalia of people. To me this is way too much.
I've played Manhunt and thought it wasn't that great, it just doesn't appeal to me. Saying that, two of the games I really liked were Postal 2 and The Punisher; in both games you did terrible things to people for no real advance the plot reason. Why you ask, it's fun!
The problem most people seem to have with violent video games is that they can not separate fantasy from reality, or at least not in a certain case. All of the arguments made against games as a whole (rpgs, video games, card games, ect) seem to have a foundation in that one issue. The gamers do not seem to have a problem separating the imaginary from real life, but the detractors seem to.
Examples
A D&D player with a necromancer does not necessarily worship Satan or some pagan god. This also applies to World of Darkness and any other game in a fantasy setting.
Someone playing GTA probably doesn't know how to hotwire a car, nor are they likely to learn.
Someone playing Metal Gear Solid probably isn't a Green Beret, nor will they become one because of a game. In all likelyhood they work in an office and are unlikely to shoot up the place.
Most people who play a lot of fighting games do not know how to fight and will lose badly if they try.
And finally, playing a game where you are a serial killer does not make you one.
These are all fantasy, fiction, make believe or call it what you will just as much of the other sources of entertainment are be they movie, radio, or book. If violent video games are to be banned, why stop there? Get rid of any media with violence be it visual, audio, or written. Start with banning Manhunt and end with the Bible. Soon we will have no external forces to blame for the actions of others!
Sorry for the longish post, but I get kind of worked up over this stuff.

I understand that you are saying that watching/playing the game will not cause you to become a violent gun toting, ax wielding maniac. However, do you think playing these games makes you a bit more numb to seeing scenes of such violence? I know it does me... If it makes you more numb to it...does it numb the wrongness of the descripted act? For people that have their heads screwed on straight that wouldnt be a problem, but it might for someone that isnt right or is leaning in that direction.
It's a possibility that violent games may numb certain people to violent acts, but it certainly is not the only factor involved. There is film and written literature that normally is worse than what you would see/do in a video game. Personally I don't think I've been numbed to violence, as I am very squeamish when it comes to blood. The reason it doesn't bother me in games is that it isn't real. Problems only arise when someone has trouble distinguishing reality from fantasy, and those people are ticking time bombs regardless of stimuli.
