White pupils, especially boys, from poor homes are most likely to persistently underachieve, a study says.

These figures/ratings are still being claimed as true here in the Uk, I think most part is caused by boys in low paid families/single parent families being expected to be "man of the house" at a very young age, and instead of attending school, trying to financially support their family.
Another part to this, is gang culture in the Uk, where many, mostly boys join gangs and they tend to drop out of school. Once you miss too much schooling, I think that it becomes a vicious circle, and becomes very difficult to get yourself back on "an even keel", added to this the fact that there is probably no encouragement from home, it all adds up to a sorry story.
