Is Cain Bigfoot?

Is Cain Bigfoot?

I searched to insure this topic has not been covered and see only bits and pieces mentioned thus I will start us off with some historical background to build a foundation from.

Genesis (4:1-17) presents a brief account of the brothers. This passage, in the Bible, at the crux of the story of Cain and Abel reads:

QUOTE
"In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. But Abel brought the fat, fatlings, or milk as Josephus has it (the possible renderings of the consonantal Hebrew) from the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him."
- Genesis 4:3-8

The story continues with God approaching Cain asking about Abel's whereabouts. In a response that has become a well-known saying, Cain answers, "Am I my brother's keeper?"

Finally, seeing through Cain's deception, as
QUOTE
"the voice of [Abel's] blood is screaming to [God] from the ground", God curses Cain to wander the earth. Cain is overwhelmed by this and appeals in fear of being killed by other men, and so God places a mark on Cain so that he would not be killed, stating that "whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be upon him sevenfold". Cain then departs, "to the land wandering".

We have a total of 5 individuals roaming the Earth's surface not tasting of a physical death as we know it, 3 Nephites, John, and as mentioned, Cain.

Thousands of years later we continue:

David W. Patten was an Apostle of the church serving under the Prophet Jospeh Smith himself gives an account of seeing Cain as a man covered with dense hair as he rode a horse returning home from one of his many missions for the church. Their brief conversation was this:

QUOTE
DWP- "Who are you?"

C- "I'm Cain, who slew his brother Abel"

DWP- "Where do you dwell?"

C- "I have no home.  I am a wanderer in the earth and travel to and fro.  I am misery, a creature without santuary."

DWP- "Why are you here?"

C- "My mission is to go to and fro in the earth and destroy the souls of men."

DWP- "I rebuke you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the virtue of the Holy Priesthood which I behold."

This account by The Apostle and a subsiquent one from A.O. Smoot on the same incident lend to its credibility.

We have yet another, less credible story relating to Cain and these latter days from an LDS individual living in the 1940's-50's in the state of Montana. While fishing a man covered in dense hair came down from a wooded area and asked what time it was. When told the time of day, he then asked, specifcally the year. Once he received an answer, he went back into the wooded area.

My interest in this subject was kick-started by a very good documentary on the Discovery Channel 6 months ago where scientists debated the plausibility of a Bigfoot type creature existing in the United States. In the end , the panel was split with the majority discounting all Bigfoot claims. Subsiquent searches brought to lilght the Apostle's account of his interaction with Cain, and more importantly Cain's Bigfoot-like appearance.

Further reading took me to an interesting book entitled The Clan of Cain by Shane Lester. I purchased the soft cover from Amazon. It details a ficticious story based on the Patten story and it's impact on a graduate student from the U of U stationed with a research team who has discovered a wounded 'Bigfoot'. The book has a very interesting and thought-provoking ending dealing with those who attempt to fid and kill Cain in these modern times. I recommend it. Light reading yet fantasticly interesting topic.

This topic beings about some additional questions:

1. We know Cain Worshiped Satan more than God and thus it makes sence his job now would be the demise of humanity, much like the 1/3 hosts of heaven that were cast down from the preexistence. My question is HOW does Cain go about this task?

2. What did God do to these 5 individual's bodies so that they do not age?

3. If Cain is not the foundation of the bigfoot myth, what is?

Food for thought.

Bigfoot Cain Is

Hyperwrx, interesting points. I am personally a bit skeptical to believe Cain is some type of Big Foot based only in the Scriptures. There is no mention of the "sign" God put upon him and as I agree we should think about the experiences of these Apostles, let's not forget that Bruce R. Mc Conkie also an Apostle, stated (to my disagreement) that the sign put upon him was the "dark skin and the flat nose" making reference to the Black race.

I am not sure what you are exactly asking. We know Cain rules over Satan as the Son of Perdition so I assume he is in constant communication with him as to what to do to continue destroying the souls of men. Seeing how evil the world has become, they seem to be doing a pretty good job.

Only God knows.

Since the Scriptures make no mention on what the "sign" really is, it can be anything really, don't you think?

I understand the mark God put on Cain was to insure he would not be killed while he remained on the Earth. A 'black skin and flat nose' mark wouldn't distinguish him from many and surely wouldn't keep people from killing him.

It is really possible that big foot is Cain? Why? Well after 6,000 years of not shaving as well as taking a bath, well you too would be hairy as well as having big feet. (smelly ones too).

Bigfoot Cain Is

I'm going to be the sceptic here. I discussed this with other members of the church. Even though Cain was given a curse to wonder the earth there is a book called the Book of Jasher gives an account of the death of Cain.

QUOTE (Jasher 2:26-30)
"And Lamech was old and advanced in years, and his eyes were dim that he could not see, and Tubal Cain, his son, was leading him and it was one day that Lamech went into the field and Tubal Cain his son was with him, and whilst they were walking in the field, Cain the son of Adam advanced towards them; for Lamech was very old and could not see much, and Tubal Cain his son was very young.  And Tubal Cain told his father to draw his bow, and with the arrows he smote Cain, who was yet far off, and he slew him, for he appeared to them to be an animal.  And the arrows entered Cain's body although he was distant from them, and he fell to the ground and died.  And the Lord requited Cain's evil according to his wickedness, which he had done to his brother Abel, according to the word of the Lord which he had spoken.  And it came to pass when Cain had died, that Lamech and Tubal went to see the animal which they had slain, and they saw, and behold Cain their grandfather was fallen dead upon the earth."

If this is accurate then Cain and Bigfoot are not one and the same. I believe that when David W. Patten ran into Cain it was simply his spirit.

If we believe the Book of Jasher concerning this event (which I address below) how would Cain's spirit be found 1000's of miles and years away from where his physical body was slain?

Can we use the Book of Jasher as a viable source to weigh these type of mysteries?

QUOTE
Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, "Lost Scripture", p. 454, lists it among books "which are not now available." One notable exception which suggests a "wait and see" attitude is that Neal A. Maxwell in But for a Small Moment, p. 49, ingeniously excludes Jasher from the list of books known to be lost: "Among those writings lost are the writings of Samuel, the seer; Nathan; the Acts of Solomon; Shemaiah; Ahijah; Iddo; Jehu; and Enoch. Joshua mentions the book of Jasher (Joshua 10:13). "
# Edward J. Brandt, "I Have a Question: I recently acquired a copy of a text called The Book of Jasher, which is claimed to be the book of missing scripture referred to in the Bible. Can you tell me if it is authentic?", Ensign (June 1981) pp. 36-37.p

When Cain was cursed by God to wander the Earth until his second coming- I think exactly that will transpire. The Cain/Bigfoot Theory, because we do not have any prophets or apostles aside from one), weighing in on it, is tough to expound upon.

Rather off topic, but...
I enjoy reading revelations, visions, and books claiming to be inspired by God not from LDS prophets and apostles. As a rule of thumb, I don't allow them to solve LDS doctrinal questions. Some of these works are tough to ignore, such as Bishop Koyle's dreams and premonitions. I am left to think- many prophesies from these individuals come true. With that in mind, I think to myself- If these revelations are not of God, who are they from? For me, that questions is easily answered.

I have studied the Doctrine of this Gospel quite intensively and don't recall this quote. Where did you find this? Please I need a sourse for this one.

I too enjoy reading Apocryphal Writings, but we can not dismiss something because it isn't in our standard works. There are many books out there that carry the spirit with them. We must read of the best of books as it states in D&C. I do not disqualify any book least it be of God and is a true witness.

There is only 3 reference I know of to when the Apostle David W. Patten (1799-1838) spoke with "Cain". I reference that because Cain himself said, "I have no home. I am a wanderer in the earth and travel to and fro. I am misery, a creature without santuary."

1. A detailed account of the conversation can be found in the book THE LIFE OF DAVID W. PATTEN, By L.A. Wilson, p.46, 47.

2. Pres. Kimball related the event in The Miricle of Forgiveness:

QUOTE
Spencer W. Kimball, The Miracle of Forgiveness, p.127-128
On the sad character Cain, an interesting story comes to us from Lycurgus A. Wilson's book on the life of David W. Patten. From the book I quote an extract from a letter by Abraham O. Smoot giving his recollection of David Patten's account of meeting "a very remarkable person who had represented himself as being Cain."
As I was riding along the road on my mule I suddenly noticed a very strange personage walking beside me"¦.  His head was about even with my shoulders as I sat in my saddle. He wore no clothing, but was covered with hair. His skin was very dark. I asked him where he dwelt and he replied that he had no home, that he was a wanderer in the earth and traveled to and fro. He said he was a very miserable creature, that he had earnestly sought death during his sojourn upon the earth, but that he could not die, and his mission was to destroy the souls of men. About the time he expressed himself thus, I rebuked him in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by virtue of the Holy Priesthood, and commanded him to go hence, and he immediately departed out of my sight"¦.*

3. David Patten related the event to a friend, A.O. Smoot who put them in his journal.

I hunted through the Standard Wroks, nothing relating to him living past a normal lifespan.
