High School Racism
The Case of the Jena Six: Black High School Students Charged with Attempted Murder for Schoolyard Fight After Nooses Are Hung from Tree.
Six black students at Jena High School in Central Louisiana were arrested last December after a school fight in which a white student was beaten and suffered a concussion and multiple bruises. The six black students were charged with attempted murder and conspiracy. They face up to 100 years in prison without parole. The fight took place amid mounting racial tension after a black student sat under a tree in the schoolyard where only white students sat. The next day three nooses were hanging from the tree.

Interesting story. If is true, it seems like Black folks in that little town in Lousiana are living in some sort of institutionalized slavery. I DO see the connection between the nooses and race (KKK). I do not understand how the rest cannot see it.
The news of what I call the 'Jena Affair' seems to be all over the net now. At first glance it seems like this is just an over blown incident made to look like something more serious when it was just a prank. I may be wrong, any thoughts?

The March on Jena Thousands of people descended on the small town of Jena, La., today to protest what they say is the unjust imprisonment of six black teenagers for the beating of a white classmate. It's a scene out of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. "Nightline" co-anchor Terry Moran is live from Jena as the march winds down. Ref. Nightline |
JB, I don't think it was a prank at all but carefully orchestrated. Having said that, I do not justify the beating of this student because it was plain wrong, we are not beasts but humans and there are other ways to resolve conflict. I do think they should spend sometime in jail for what they did but 100 years? I think that's ridiculous.
I'm kind of late in posting here, but the topic on the noose peaked my interest. I have to admit when I first heard about the story I didn't really care. At the time I suspected and still do that the incident was hijacked by political forces who spun in a way that assisted their platform.
Looking up information of the incident I've come up with this.
* 3 teens attacked 1 teen because he was white (Isn't that the definition of hate crime?)
* teen attacked was said to have suffered a concussion and ?bruises?
Photo of the kid
* nooses in the tree were meant for the school's rodeo team (seems odd)
It sounds like the attackers were simply thugs looking for a reason, and it sickens me that people would support them. These are the type of people who belong in prison if we want to live in a society of laws and not arms.
Institutionalized to me suggests large groups of people condoning the actions of the kids who put up a noose. I do not think the community at large supports these actions.
My view is that because some people act like this does not necessarily imply that the entire area is racist. I think it more likely suggests that there are some individuals who have not given up the past. On this particular case though, the racist violent symbols of the white kids however do not justify the racist violent actions by the black kids.

News story of support
It looks like the self appointed leaders of the black community have come to the support of them.
Heh, looks like I can't count. There were 6 people beating on the kid. At my high school we used to hang nooses on trees during Halloween, would that be considered racist?
