Encarnacion Memory In
I was just thinking about the many memories I have about her, specially while I was a small child. She was always too "old" to be my mother and children would make fun of me while I used to tell them she was not my grandmother but my mom (I did not know then how to explain the atypical family I had at home).
One day, when my sister was around 6 and I was around 4, my sister saw a pic of our birth mother in a box and asked "Is this our sister?", grandma smiled and said "I think is time for us to talk about something". She then explained to us that our birth Mom was in heaven and that she was in fact our grandmother but that it was fine for us to call her Mom as well. We did not fully understand what all that meant, specially because few years later I would ask her how come we never go to visit my birth Mom's grave. She would try her best to change the subject since the topic was obviously too hard to explain to such small child with inquisitive questions about herself and her background.
Then years later, she explained to us that our birth Mom was in fact missing due to one of the
Military Governments that left more than 30,000 people missing. She explained to us in such easy way that we could well understand what it meant.
When I was not even born, my grandmother had a car accident that left many scars (specially on her head), she was not able to heal completely because she had to work to maintain her family. Years later, she had a heart attack who left her bed resting for months.
I recall the funny stories she used to tell us in summer nights while looking at the stars and moon. It was through her that I learned the moon has a little donkey, the same donkey that took Mary while she was pregnant of Jesus. I recall her stories about speaking German through one of her grandparents as well as having Quechua Indians as neighbors. She used to tell us stories of alligators trying to catch her and her friends because they were playing with her eggs as well as stories of Faith and determination who made me who I am today. Thanks Mom, thanks for such wonderful memories...
