New And Everlasting Covenant

I am sorry if my ignorance shines through in my questions. I really do enjoy reading here, but I know I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as all of you. Please be kind and bear with me.

Was the New and Everlasting Covenant in force before Christ came to the earth? I have to believe that eternal marriage was available to the righteous through out the earth's history, but I'm not sure. There were temples - but did they have all of the ordinances and covenants that we have today in our temples?

Thanks.

Covenant Everlasting New

The new and everlasting covenant was revealed by Jesus Christ through the prophet Joseph Smith in this dispensation. Prior to that, there was a period of Apostasy. Hence, the name "New" (because is revealed again after a period of Apostasy) and everlasting because is eternal.

We know Adam and Eve were partakers of this (they were married by the Lord) so yes, eternal marriage was available prior to Christ's birth since it is an Eternal covenant.

Rather off topic, but...

New And Everlasting Covenant Studies Doctrine Mormon

I believe that is why it has been called "New and Everlasting" covenant. The new refers to its being revealed to an apostate world and the Everlasting refers to the eternal nature of the covenant. This Covenant I believe is tied to the Abrahamic covenants.

From James B. Mayfield "Latter-day covenant Israel.

QUOTE

Known as the "new and everlasting covenant" (D&C 22:1; Jer. 31:31-34; 32:36-40), it is included in the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is considered "new" in each age when it is given to God's people, yet it is "everlasting" because the conditions and promises never change

So yes, the New and Everlasting Covenant was found in previous dispensations but was lost after varying degrees of apostasy. The only way that it can be lost today is by personal apostacy, as it has been promised not to be taken away from the church in this dispensation.
