Trying Times for an Ambitious Mayor
Mayor Cory Booker, a young Rhodes Scholar, was elected to office with a promise to restore law and order in the crime-plagued city of Newark, N.J. But since last Saturday's ruthless execution-style murder of three college students, even Booker's supporters are pressing him to deliver results. Today, two suspects sought in the crime were captured -- a first step toward what Booker calls a major opportunity to galvanize the community and take back the mean streets of his city.

New Jersey Votes to Abolish Death Penalty
New Jersey lawmakers voted 44 to 36 on Thursday to abolish executions in the state. Democratic Governor Jon Corzine has said he will approve the measure next week. This will make New Jersey the first state in the United States to abolish the death penalty in 40 years. We speak with Lorry Post, an organizer with New Jerseyeans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty. He founded this group to honor his daughter who was murdered in Georgia in 1988.
