Is that doctrinal or urban legend?

Women More Spiritual - Page 2

Elder Boyd K. Packer gave a talk in the October 1993 General Conference. For one side he said:

QUOTE
There is nothing in the revelations which suggests that to be a man rather than to be a woman is preferred in the sight of God, or that He places a higher value on sons than on daughters.

All virtues listed in the scriptures-love, joy, peace, faith, godliness, charity-are shared by both men and women, 25 and the highest priesthood ordinance in mortality is given only to man and woman together.

Making it clear that we all share the same virtues and spirituality regardless of our genre. But then he said this:

QUOTE
A man who holds the priesthood does not have an advantage over a woman in qualifying for exaltation. The woman, by her very nature, is also co-creator with God and the primary nurturer of the children. Virtues and attributes upon which perfection and exaltation depend come naturally to a woman and are refined through marriage and motherhood.

Come natural to a woman? Isn't he implying then that "just because" someone was born a woman, they have certain attributes and virtues that come naturally to them because of their genre? Isn't this connected to their spirituality?

Elder Boyd K. Packer

QUOTE

He is discussing the women's natural ability to nurture children which is a Godly attribute. There are also Godly attributes that come naturally to man. These Godly attributes of Man and Women are essential to the exaltation of both Sexes.

From "The Family Is Central to the Creator's Plan" from the source article
QUOTE

Except Adam and Eve by nature be different from one another, they could not multiply and fill the earth. The complementing differences are the very key to the plan of happiness.

That's the first part but what about the second?

If I may interject, what difference does it make on Pres. Packer's opinion? He is not the official proponent of LDS doctrine. He is making his opinion known. So that gets us to the theory. And, sure, the theory is out there.

That doesn't help us answer whether it is doctrine or not.

Tortdog, I am fully aware is his opinion. The reason I brought it up was because I could not understand the two statements since for one side he seems to believe both men and women are the same, yet in the second statement he seems to be implying something different.

Rather off topic, but...
This is a discussion thread on the topic and all LDS sources are welcome to be brought here. So far we have theories, but we still searching and learning.

This says exactly what it says, Women have Virtues and Attributes of perfection and exaltation that come naturally to them. Elder Packer, however, is not excluding men when he talks about the attributes of perfection and exaltation that come naturally.

QUOTE

Some roles are best suited to the masculine nature and others to the feminine nature. Both the scriptures and the patterns of nature place man as the protector, the provider.

I would consider protector and provider to be "virtues and attributes of perfection and exaltation", that come naturally to the male part of the equation, that in no way diminishes the great contribution of women.

Funny because most of the ones who say we are special are the priesthood leaders that talk about the sisters. I do not think I ever remember hearing any of the sisters talking about us as being extra anything.

Jen, that's so true. I suppose because besides being more Spiritual we are more Humble as well. laugh.gif (Just kidding). But yes, it is usually the Brethren who like to make mention of these things, they also do it with regards to their wives. I suppose they are speaking to the nature of women but really, there is nothing in the Scriptures that indicates that women are more Spiritual than men.
