U.S. CRACKS DOWN ON GREEN CARDS THAT DON'T EXPIRE
Thousands of permanent residents whose green cards have no expiration dates would have to pay up to $370 to replace them under a proposal announced Wednesday by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

No, they always had an expiration date in the front of the card. This is not new. It usually last for ten years.

Because they never bothered to renew them taking advantage that prior to 1989, the cards did not have an expiration date . So there were people walking around with cards as old as 1977.
