I did not know Green Cards were supposed to have an expiry date, or is this just a new thing to make sure you 'check in' with the US government?

No, they always had an expiration date in the front of the card. This is not new. It usually last for ten years.

Because they never bothered to renew them taking advantage that prior to 1989, the cards did not have an expiration date . So there were people walking around with cards as old as 1977.
