Many times I thought about the idea of having a baby at home but it concerns me the fact that midwives (who are not doctors) usually do it and of course the fact of any complication arising is something to think about.

Most women in normal health can have their babies at home, and actually *should*, in my opinion. Women at risk, such as with diabetes or epilepsy or some type of physical disorder, or whose unborn babies are at some type of high risk, should not consider home birth.

Most midwives are not incompetent. Home-birthing parents should interview and talk to references for local midwives, don't just pick one from an ad. Talk to other parents (lots of them! ) who have had successful home births.

Doctors will always criticize home birth midwives because they want ALL people to come to the hospital and utilize their services. They lose money when parents have babies at home.

Unfortunate thing is IF there are complications it may then be too late. While I think having babies at home is appealing, I would wonder why risk it if you can have the child in an environment with increased safety.

That's exactly what the doctors and hospital "establishment" want you to think, tortdog - that their facility is much safer than your home - when in fact it's exactly the opposite. Do you know where the United States is on the world list of infant mortality? We're something like 42nd! Cuba is ahead of the US! That's pathetic. And that's with the majority of women giving birth in hospitals or birthing clinics. https://en.wikipedia.org/

With proper monitoring by a qualified midwife, as I stated above, MOST women can birth at home. High-risk women would be screened out prior to the birth.

The problem is that the health-care industry wants everyone to believe that they are not safe having birth anywhere but in their facilities, and they have done a fantastic job of convincing us all that we are putting our lives and our babies' lives at risk if we do anything outside of what has become the "societal norm."

How do they do this? They make headlines (like the one in this thread) go world wide! Blame it all on the midwives... If this mother had chosen to birth in the hospital with a qualified doctor, this wouldn't have happened.... etc etc etc. How often do you hear about the GOOD things that are happening with midwives and home births? Why do you NOT hear about the atrocities occurring in hospitals every day? It's absurd.
