We must understand that the term Lamanite was used to distinguish a people of a certain color AND a people that refused to follow the Gospel. I cannot phantom why anyone would want to refer to a Member of the Church as that. It just goes to show that we must analyze how terms are used to sterotype people. |

Rather off topic, but... I love this Community, people here try their best to answer questions and prove good points. |

I think there are two questions that can be asked for this topic and they are very different.
Can a Lamanite (or a black as we have been discussing) be president?
and
Will a Lamanite be president of the church?
These questions could very well have different answers.
I believe a black could be called as president of the church, but I do not know if it will happen because of the weakness of some members.
Please keep those of African descent out of this Topic for two reasons:
1. The Topic is about a Lamanite President - this refers to a specific group of people.
2. I have already stated in this Thread that there is a FULL and indepth Thread within the Mature section that goes into aspects of this that cannot be made public.
Now back to the Topic:
We seem to be asking the same question over and over... can a Lamanite be President. First one must define what is a Lamanite and then the answer can be had.
For instance:
1. If Lamanite refers to dark skinned people who failed to obey the Gospel (the term given in the early part Book of Mormon) then the answer is "No".
2. If Lamanite refers to anyone who chose to be opposed to the Gospel (a term given in the latter stages of the Book of Mormon) then the answer is "No".
3. If a Lamanite refers to the latter day slang word which refers to the descendants of the Lamanites or aboriginal Indians then the answer is "No".
4. If a Lamanite refers to a baptized Member of the Church, a Melchizedek priesthood holder in good standing, who is aboriginal (I do not know why the term is used still) then the answer is "Yes".
So pick one and you get your answer.

WOW! That thread took some time to read! I want to say thanks to everyone that posted such great thoughts and opinions.
One thing that kept coming through my mind as I read them was how there are patterns in the Book of Mormon--that we can apply as a guide to our times. One of those situations we can liken to ourselves might be Samuel the Lamanite. Right before Christ was born, Samuel was the one chosen of the Lord to prophecy to the Nephites. He declared boldly that he was a Lamanite (obviously righteous).
So could this foreshadow our day, in that as we get closer and closer to the coming of Christ, one such as Samuel may usher our Savior back for his 2nd coming?
Just some thoughts that I had while I was reading all the posts. Hope they make some kind of sense!
Good point about Samuel. I believe he used the term "Lamanite" because he wanted to distinguish how wicked the Nephites were that it took a Lamanite (known to be the 'wicked' ones) to come and tell them that they needed to repent.
JB--Thanks and that is a good point as well regarding the term "Lamanite" and how Samuel used it.
Rather off topic, but... I noted when I went back to read the account of it in Helaman (16:4) that after they listened and believed on the words of Samuel that they went to find Nephi to be baptized. |

Comments: I'm kind of wondering why a topic like this would even be brought up? There hasn't been anything written saying a descendant of the Lamanites can't be a prophet s o then why not. I don't think it will happen personally because we're still waiting on someone to be called into the Twelve to make it possible that is from that line and it hasn't happened.
