A 23-year-old college student claimed Friday that Southwest Airlines singled her out after a male flight attendant told her that her white denim miniskirt, high-heel sandals and sweater over a tank top was too "revealing."

Too "sexy" For A Plane? - Page 2

The airline was totally within their rights to ask her to cover-up to board the flight and she was within her rights to refuse to do so and not board if she so desired. There was a compromise made and she complied with the wishes and made her complaint known after she got to her destination...which is again within her rights as a consumer. Her complaint was heard by the company and she was issued a apology and probably some free mileage and tickets for future use.

Now here is the best part: Southwest got a great deal of publicity on this. Do you think it was negative? Do you think that people will not fly Southwest because of this? Southwest is one of the larger discount carriers in the US. If you are going to fly them, chances are you are looking at price and there are not a lot of other options better then Southwest, if they fly to where you want to go. This was one great commercial for them...and it cost them VERY little. Of course, this was not done on purpose, but the management of Southwest definitely made the best out of the situation.

Buying a seat on an airplane does not entitle you to do whatever you want in that seat while on the plane. You are paying for a service and the airline has set rules and conditions under which they are willing to supply that service to you. One of them that the airline has set is about appearance. It is vague (purposely I am sure), but basically states that if your appearance could be offensive to other on the plane, you may be denied boarding.

Plane For quotsexyquot Too

I wholeheartedly agree with the airline for speaking to the Hooters waitress about her apparel. That skirt is ridiculously short. It appears that the skirt was a certain length and she chose to cut it even shorter! As JB said, it would have been more appropriate for a female flight attendant to speak to Kyla Ebbert rather than, a male attendant. However, we do not know if there were only male flight attendants on that particular shift, so maybe this is why a male spoke to her and not a female flight attendant.

After watching Ebbert on the Dr Phil show, it became apparent that the Hooters waitress wanted to capitalize on her situation by suing the airline. I think she is a hypocrite for telling Dr Phil that once she receives an apology, she will be satisfied. After Dr Phil read the apology from the CEO of Southwest Airlines, she started singing a different tune. She twisted her own words by saying that, if she received an apology, she will stop going on talk shows. Her attorney indicated to Dr Phil that this incident occurred in July 2007 and the apology came two months later, after his client made a big fuss over the matter. The airline even sent two free tickets for her and she publicly refused them by returning them to Dr Phil. I think the host of the show was taken aback by her sudden change in behaviour. It is uncertain if Dr Phil said something to upset her or if she was offended by the apology itself. Was the apology a sincere one or more "tongue in cheek?" You be the judge! Look for Etiquette Dilemmas. Then click on "Did Southwest go too far or was Kyla too tantalizing for take off?"

Rather off topic, but...
I believe on the Dr Phil show, Kyla Ebbert mentioned that she had a doctor's appointment for a post operation surgery. My question is, do people always dress like this whenever they have to visit the doctor?

Too "sexy" For A Plane? Reviews Consumer & Travel Family Culture

What a bunch of hypocrites we have in the world. It was so obvious that all she was looking for was her 5 minutes of fame. This woman made such a big deal about being told to cover while she was traveling on that plane (she was even in Dr. Phil) but she is NOT embarrassed at all posing nude on Playboy. rolleyes.gif

QUOTE
DALLAS -  A 23-year-old college student who was told by a Southwest Airlines employee that her outfit was too revealing to fly is wearing even less on Playboy's Web site.

Kyla Ebbert appears in a series of pictures - some in lingerie, some nude - under the heading, "Legs in the Air."

"They're very tastefully done," Ebbert told The Associated Press on Thursday. "I don't see anything wrong with the female body."

Playboy contacted Ebbert's attorney to pitch the idea of posing. After "a little bit of talking" to convince her mother, Ebbert agreed. She said her boyfriend supported her decision, but "the most hesitant one was my dad."

On its Web site, Playboy says Ebbert "was too sexy for Southwest Airlines, but she's perfect for Playboy."

Ebbert said she was paid "less than six figures" to pose, but wouldn't give the specific amount.

A Southwest Airlines Co. employee pulled Ebbert off a flight this summer and forced her to adjust her outfit of a tank top, sweater and miniskirt before getting back on the plane.

Ebbert ripped the airline in appearances on NBC's "The Today Show" and "The Dr. Phil Show," during which she wore the outfit. Southwest officials said they don't have a dress code but don't want customers' attire to offend other passengers....

There are several things that bother me about this case.

1. Why do people feel they have the right to complain about someones cloths? What ever happened to mind your own bee's wax?

2. The airline has the right to refuse service to any one for any reason. Most of their disclaimers say that.

3. It seems suspicious that she is milking this "embarrassment" for so much.

4. Would the airline take the same path if it was something else being worn that was offensive?

Plane For quotsexyquot Too

It appears that other passengers are taking a leaf from Kyla's book and are speaking out against Southwest Airlines. Two 18 year old girls Sarah and Nisreen, claimed that they were discriminated by the airline because of their looks. Sarah and Nisreen informed Dr Phil that their flight attendant kept ignoring them and was extremely rude to them, throughout the flight. The teenagers are puzzled by Southwest Airlines action, to have them escorted off the plane by the Los Angeles police. Sarah and Nisreen insist that they did nothing wrong and were unsure if the airline treated them unfairly because of their looks, race (one teen is Arabic) or the fact that they were young. However, a passenger, Janelle, who witnessed the whole incident concerning these two young ladies, tells a different story. Janelle described Sarah and Nisreen as two young spoilt brats with an attitude. The witness further explains that there were many attractive passengers on the flight that particular day and the teens were not escorted off the plane because of their looks but their attitude was the real issue.

Of course, we all remember Kyla Ebbert, the Hooters waitress who was almost not allowed to fly on Southwest Airlines because of her sexy apparel. Kyla, who was also on the Dr Phil show, stated that she wished to distance herself from Sarah and Nisreen, whom she described as longing for instant celebrity. Kyla said that the only similarity between her situation and the two teenagers was, they all travelled on Southwest Airlines.

Two other passengers, Christina and Tarah, complained to Dr Phil that they were escorted off the plane because they were females. However, a report from Southwest Airlines, indicates that the two mature ladies were intoxicated and very rowdy throughout the flight. Passengers were also complaining about their rowdy behaviour. Christina and Tarah claim that there were two passengers sitting behind them, who were very loud and perhaps, other passengers thought that they were the ones making the noise. Christina and Tarah told Dr Phil that they were not intoxicated.

Too "sexy" For A Plane?

Working at an airport I see all kinds of dress and I can tell you there are some rather revealing outfits being worn onto a plane and even off the planes that I see. It is not always women either. For Southwest to want to kick a lady off because of how she is dressed is gonna put them out of business. I have seen people dressed a lot more revealing than she was, I looked at picture. I have seen some men in less clothes than she had on.

I do not understand why some people want to go out of their way to almost "expose" themselves while in a public place. If you want to expose yourself so much please do it somewhere away from Southwest airlines.
