A financial head in the Kremlin referred to their form of democracy as not being Western Democracy but "Eastern Democracy". He claimed that the the term Democracy does not belong to the Westerners and that they (Russians) can create their own form of Democracy - scary.

I actually see their idea as a more logical progression towards a traditional type of democracy. They really couldnt get there in one leap as they made about as big of leap as they could and keep it all together. It takes a long time to get all the controls and counterbalances in place to make the switch without too many people taking huge advantage of loopholes in the system. The people have tasted freedom now and there will be much resistance to giving that up ever again and with time...they will want more and more freedoms and will charge their government officials with getting that for them.
We say we are a democracy in the US, but we are really a Democratic Republic that has quite a bit of Socialism infuzed as far as I am concerned. It has taken a long time for our government to end up where it is today and I wouldnt expect the Russians to get there in 20 years.

In regards to the Georgian conflict, no. As a country seeking to be a leader in the world and region, Russia needed to try to go through the UN first before invading. At least play like the US did until the point it is obvious of your intentions...but that game takes a lot of time and effort.
However, I do see the logical progession from Communism to a Democracy. There is no way that you can expect to switch government styles fast...with one exception and that is a dictatorship. Those can be established quickly and typically brutally. Going from Communism to Democracy is a huge shift. Do you throw all the people out that were part of the past? Probably not...well that ensures that there will be a bit of the past in the future. The infrastructure changes are immense in switching from one to the other. What works in getting the switch initially started will become cumbersome and cost restrictive later. It is a journey not a sprint and it never ends. The US government is way different in what they cover from just say 1950... It is evolution. Their evolution makes sense to me.
Their foreign policy doesn't make much sense with what they appear to be trying to obtain and that is respect.

Earlier, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned the US and its allies that supporting President Saakashvili would be a historic mistake, and called for an arms embargo "while a different government turns Georgia into a normal state". "To protect the region from the recurrence of violence, Russia will continue taking measures to punish the guilty, so that this regime is never able to do evil," he said. Speaking in Moscow, Mr Lavrov said Russia had returned to the world stage as a responsible state which could defend its citizens. Mr Lavrov's comments follow Mr Medvedev's redefining of Russia's foreign policy principles. |
