Feed My Sheep

Feed My Sheep

"Jesus showed patience and love to all who came to Him seeking relief for their physical, emotional, or spiritual illnesses and who felt discouraged and downtrodden.

"To follow the Savior's example, each one of us must look around and reach out to the sheep who are facing the same circumstances and lift them up and encourage them to proceed on the journey towards eternal life.

"This need today is as great as or perhaps even greater than when the Savior walked on this earth. As shepherds we must understand that we should nurture each one of our sheep to bring them to Christ, which is the purpose of all we do in this Church."

Ref. Ulisses Soares, " 'Feed My Sheep,' " Ensign, Nov. 2005, 98

Sheep Feed

If you hold the priesthood, or have a calling to serve others, you are a shepherd.
I think as good shepherds, we must be aware of those around us at all times. Visiting Teaching is a good start. Just by showing love for those you visit teach and staying in tune with their needs, can strengthen them and help them overcome their challenges and let them remain in the straight and narrow path.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is about people, not programs. Sometimes, in the haste of fulfilling our Church responsibilities, we spend too much time concentrating on programs, instead of focusing on people, and end up taking their real needs for granted. When things like that happen, we lose the perspective of our callings, neglect people, and prevent them from reaching their divine potential to gain eternal life.

QUOTE
Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

"He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

"He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep" (John 21:15-17).

The most important thing to me is not only in the feeding, but what is being fed. It is scary to be caught in routine actions just because we are told we should. I have found that oft times careless and lose conversation is being passed off as feeding when it really does nothing - the equivalent of giving candy instead of meat and potatoes.

In the case of home teachers we are given specific messages to take, their should be little variance in the message since it comes from the First Presidency. Additionally some of us gain a testimony of being a shepherd during the process of shepherding and not before. For some it just takes time.

I don't necessarily agree with that. I think it is a good guide to follow if you are new to Home Teaching but I think there is the First Presidency message AND what the family needs. If you are there to feed them, then they may need more than what you 'think' they need.

I have to disagree with you LDSexpert. Some families are less active or inactive, and barely let you in their house. They might really just need a friend, or to be fellowshipped for a while. Other families are very active, get the Ensign, and do their home teaching. They may have taught the First Presidency's message five times that month. Which doesn't mean they can't benefit from receiving it, but you should let the Spirit guide you as to the needs of who you teach.
In "Teaching, no greater call" pg 9, it says:

international QUOTE
3. We are to teach by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Having commanded all teachers to teach the principles of the gospel as found in the standard works, the Lord says: "These shall be their teachings, as they shall be directed by the Spirit."
Then He gives the great directive: "And the Spirit shall be given. . . By the prayer of faith; and if ye receive not the Spirit ye shall not teach."
Along with this instruction, He gives this promise:
"As ye shall lift up your voices by the Comforter, ye shall speak and prophesy as seemeth me good; For, behold, the Comforter knoweth all things, and beareth record of the Father and of the Son" (D&C 42:13-14, 16-17).
Every teacher in every teaching situation might well reason along this line:

If the Lord Jesus were here, what He would say in this situation would be prefect.
But He is not here. Instead, He has sent me to represent Him. I should say what He would say if He were here; I should say what He wants said.
The only way I can do this is to have Him tell me what to say.
This revealed direction can come to me only by the power of His Spirit. Therefore I must be guided by the Spirit if I am to teach in my capacity as an agent of the Lord.

These principles of teaching gospel truths by the power of the Spirit are further expounded in another revelation by means of revealed questions and answers in this way:
Question: "I the Lord ask you this question-unto what were ye ordained?" (D&C 50:13).
That is: "What is your commission? What have I empowered you to do? What authorization have you received from me?"
Answer: "To preach my gospel by the Spirit, even the Comforter which was sent forth to teach the truth" (D&C
50:14).
That is: "Your commission, your authorization, the thing you have been ordained to do is to teach my gospel, not any private views, not the philosophies of the world, but my everlasting gospel, and to do it by the power of my Spirit, all in harmony with the commandment I have heretofore given: "If ye receive not the Spirit ye shall not teach.""

I have to say also though, that I do agree, that sometimes we need pratice. And,if your only able to bring the FP message, since it is Written by the Spirit(I assume), It would be better than nothing at all. I'm just trying to say ,that I think we should be sensitive to our families needs.

Feed Sheep

I'm a firm believer that if someone doesn't want to visit another brother or sister, they shouldn't. I think these programs are wonderful but trend to encourage service by guilt or force. The bigger question is: Why is it so hard for LDS members to feed His sheep?
