Sexually charged ="Mormon's exposed",or there is something mysterious about mormons taking their clothes off (the association between Missionary work and exposing the body).

I personally do not see what is so sexually charged or mysterious about LDS men taking off their shirts. I do not get any such attention at the pool. I am not sure how missionary work and exposing the body clash. I guess it depends what one means by exposing his body.I personally have no problem with this calendar. I served a mission as well and it does not offend me at all. When I saw that he was excommunicated I was kind of surprised that this was one of the issues brought up in question. I understand that this was not the only thing, but the fact that it was brought up I thought was kind of strange. I think we LDS are just so scandalized by by sex that we cannot help it. It really is on our minds quite a bit. We really place a lot of attention and mental energy on if.
It reminds me the story of Pres. McKay when at a parade there was a float with young women in swimsuits, and it caused a lot of talk among the viewers. When asked about how he felt about the women, Pres. McKay said I really did not notice that the beautiful girls were only wearing swim suits. Perhaps this is a lesson we can all learn from.

I guess the new news is that this man is now not going to be rewarded his PHD from BYU over this after he has completed the degree. I personally think this is wrong and very academically dishonest. But that is BYU, and why I never would study there because of such lack of academic freedom and expression. But that is my opinion.

I don't know where you live, but that's not the LDS community I'm familiar with. I do see a lot of ex-Mormons and Anti-Mormons who focus much of their attention on sexual matters and try to throw it in discussions of all kinds with members, but I do not really see it as a hot topic among folks I know in the church.

The problem with the calendars is portraying in a sexual manner these young missionaries who were out saving souls. There's nothing mysterious about it. But as has been mentioned already, what about the souls who were brought to the gospel and the church by one of these young men -- who discussed moral purity and modesty in their lessons to the new members? What happens when they see these young moral examples now flaunting their bodies in a sexual way? That's my problem with the whole premise, and why the promoter of this calendar should have been excommunicated. I don't agree with his losing his Phd over it, but he is unrepentant about the calendar and so faces the consequences within the church. However, as with many such enterprises, I believe he'll make lots of money and go on to become a devout critic of the church. I think it's a sad story all around.

One way we spend a lot of attention on sex is talking about such topics as pre-martial sex, pornography & etc. At church. We may not be talking about it in the way the world does, but we are talking about it nevertheless and it is on our minds regardless. I am not sure if this is profitable for us, because we are still thinking about sex. I wonder sometimes if it is on our minds too much.

Again this is subjective because I do not find this sexual at all. It may be a little tacky or inappropriate but I have a hard time buying that this is a sexual pornographic issue. People are not missionaries all of their lives. They lives lives after a mission. Many that return may see if different, but all in all they are young adults who do dumb things. I think sometimes we put our elders on pedestals and forget that they are twenty something kids/ young adults so we should not be so hard on them as to demand excommunication.

I also find it may be inappropriate but not "sexual" in that manner, no more "sexual" than seeing Marie Osmond in skimpy costumes in dancing with the stars. The only issue I have with the calendar is putting the pic of the returned missionary next to one where he is serving a full time mission, tag and all. I think that's inappropriate.

Why should you unless you are gay? Also, because it is not that way for you it means it is not that way for others? Any Calendar with a pretty / handsome face on it showing muscle tone is sex charged. It may not be a porn magazine, but it is created with the idea to invite thoughts on Christ... No... On the pretty / handsome face with their tight muscles.

What other venue is there where the dangers of pre-marital sex and pornography being discussed? Is it in our popular culture? No. Is it in our Schools? No. Is it in our Political, or Scientific circles. Again no.

The argument that discussing the dangers of premarital sex and pornography leads to a unnatural focus on them, ignores the fact that we get the opposing argument (that these are natural and that they are a part of life) everyday in Society.

But a very small amount of time is used to discuss these issues (maybe one lesson out of a hundred) in our classes. In the Priesthood session of Conference it is discussed a little bit more. Apparently misused sexuality is an issue with a portion of LDS Men, and to warn against misusing the power is very appropriate, if not necessary.

The Church's seemingly outdated standards and teachings are a counter balance to the accepted wicked practices of the World. This being said, why shouldn't the Church object to using its name and ideals (namely return missionaries) as a form of worldly expression (the natural man is an enemy to God)? Would this man be facing disciplinary action if he had not mentioned that these were returned Missionaries? I doubt it. To associate return missionaries with toppless men seems incongruous and not compatible with the standards of the Church. He was an idiot to associate missionary work with sexiness.

Fatherhood = Sexy maybe.

I'm with Dbacker.

I'm all for the idea that we need to present to people that we are relatively normal, and that we aren't some sort of puritanical sect, but there are better ways to do it.

To associate these sensual images with missionaries at all is I feel very inappropriate... I certainly hope that the female version of this calendar isn't supported by any members, particularly returned sister missionaries.

Although the BYU yanking his degree seems a little odd on the surface, he did choose to jeopardize his standing with the honor code by being involved in the calendar production, and then defending it and continuing with plans for another calendar... Just because it's relatively tame by the world's standards doesn't make it okay, especially not when associating it with the church as a whole.

In addition to all of this, the modeling profession is one of the ways in which the media severely distorts our world view... Just because it is men and not women in this calendar doesn't make it any better, just less noticed. The media in general screw up our world views really badly; I'm pretty sure I could never approve of 'modeling' as it is currently typically done.

Comments: I went to his website [..] This is flat out WRONG. These calenders are inappropriate, the T-shirts poke fun at sacred callings and the whole website gave me a bad feeling. It is my opinion that anyone, male missionary or sister should be disciplined regarding this matter. This is unbelievable...this man who created these calenders did it to promote sexual feelings and arousal and it is apparent in the marketing and the message. If they do not repent and admit it is wrong, I don't think excommunication would be a bad thing. The amount of damage this is doing and the influence it could have on other people is huge. Unbelievable!
