House In Crime Area
What is the best way to check out the criminal activity in an area before one buys a house there?
I'm in Canada, and there is usually police websites available with statistics on how many crimes and what category the crimes fall into for each zone in my city. If you can't find anything on the net for your city, you could probably visit a station and ask if the police have any information like that they could give you.
You are correct this is exactly what you need to do call the local station tell the what house you are looking at. They do not wish to see a nice family move in among drug lords.
They might also direct you to a better area in similar pricing all depends who you get on the phone and what kind of day they had. So remember do not call just before they are ready to leave or on a Monday when they are playing catch up.

Most cities or towns have statics on crime and where it is occurring. The police department can be very helpful on that. Also check the local newspapers. If they have a police blog in them you can see first hand where most of the police calls are going to. A couple weeks of papers will show a very clear picture of where most crime is occurring.
Driving around and looking at the neighborhood is a good way to see too. If it looks run down and unkept then crime is probably a problem there. You want to be in a neighborhood that is looking cleaner and more well kept.
