100+% Output

Here is a question that makes you wonder... when buying hardware or software or even a hosting plan the seller will sometimes claim that it or they can give you 100%+ (maybe 110%) of your purchase in performance. With this in mind you have to wonder then what is 100%? For instance if you buy a CPU that does 3000mhz then why should they say you can get 105% value from it... does it mean that at some point you may get it to be 3150Mhz? Not likely, most CPU tests that I have done leave you knowing that your absolute max is sometimes less than what is advertised. Another example of this is when they tell you that you can get unlimited of something... as in bandwidth... so does that mean if I want to store 2000GB of web pages I can? Can I download that much too and pay nothing extra? Nah, of course not.

I have actually wondered this myself. However, being that my company hosts its software for other businesses, I understand more what they are saying. When we sell a large client, we will charge them for 100% of what they need, then add 10% more than they require for no extra charge so that it will boost their performance. However, the extra amount of performance doesn't really cost us that much extra so its still a good deal for us.

That is a good way to look at it from a business angle, but the difference in this case is something out of the box has nothing 'added' to it. It is not like you install it and then suddenly it becomes something better. Now with software that may be a different issue since many times you might by 100% of a software product and when you install it you find that you are able to download a percentage of it, but I really cannot equate this to hardware.

Well, would over clocking be considered getting 110% out of your hardware? The idea is that you can get performance that is above and beyond what is advertised by the product vendor. But with that in mind, it still wouldn't be out of box, it would require knowledge and know how and effort on your part. Outside of over clocking, I don't see how the actual claim of 100% + can be a valid claim in reference to hardware. I think that if they advertise a certain level of performance, then advertise getting more than a hundred percent, they have to lower expectations so that you think your getting a better deal than you are.

Over clocking a CPU is normally not something even recommended by hardware dealers and so it would not even be considered something that will be published as 100+ % and like you said it would take knowledge of how to do this by modifying the part (example sanding down) - another thing not recommended.
