Sony said today it has pulled a Dutch billboard advertising campaign for the new white version of its PlayStation Portable video game player and apologised to anyone offended by ad, which critics dubbed racist.

I don't know the history of the Netherlands as it relates to race. They must have a vastly different history than the U.S. though. I believe if that billboard were placed in a large city, in the U.S., it would have lasted about 10 minutes.

I think the ad did exactly what Sony wanted it to do. Generate controversy and free publicity. I don't believe for a second they thought the board would only be seen by people in that area. They knew it would be all over the news and internet.

The ad strikes that fine balance of being just racist enough to get attention, but not so racist as to put off potential customers.

They knew exactly what they were doing. In my opinion.

I don't really think that it was racist, I think it was more of something else, maybe political correctness gone too far. If they were to advertise the black style... would questions of racism have been raised?
