Protect Your Name!
Have you ever thought about this scenario:
Someone registers your name such as JohnDoe.com and then uses it as a porn site or a pyramid scheme? Not too nice to think about eh? You may wish to protect it by registering your domain name even if you do not use it for anything at least it is yours and you know that no one can do anything with it. LDS_forever and I both have our names registered and we decided to utilize them rather than just have them sit there doing nothing.
Just make sure that whomever you register with is ICANN certified. The cost of a domain ranges from US$10-15 just for the domain and then sometimes a further cost for redirecting it. Fees are paid annually, but you can register your domain for up to 10 years and then you get a discount.

Good thinking, JB! I hadn't even considered something like that.... Are there good and bad places to register? Is it very expensive, and does it cost monthly or annually? Roz (clueless on this concept) |
GoDaddy.com is one of the registrars we use. The privacy 'extra' is available but you have to pay an additional US$10 for that I believe.
Farseer, it would not be stealing if the person has a ligit reason to use the name. For instance their company or actual name is the same as yours, but you know, what is the chance of that happening. If you were to find your name already online then you can contest it and ICANN will verify, but it is a long process, so it is better to be safe than sorry, besides, in your case you can use your domain to point to your new web site if you wish
Ah! Of Course (the light bulb goes on!)... There are actually a couple of people with the same first and last name as mine -- I found that out with a credit check about 10 years ago that came up with an address in a town I had never lived in. There was no fraud or other inappropriate activity on my account, just the one address. Turned out to be a 3rd or 4th cousin I've still not met. Also a woman I met when my son was in the USAFA has same first initial and same last name. So I suppose it could happen
Good idea, to link up the genealogy website, because the actual web address is kind of long and obscure.
Thanks for the info!
