I am starting this discussion to get some reviews on this particular backup program. I am not particularly a fan of Norton products, but this one seems fairly inexpensive. Has anyone used this before, and how easy is it to use? The one I am currently looking at is Version 10. Thanks!
I am very fond of Norton Ghost myself as I have used this product for nearly ten years. This allow you to not only backup information but actually creates the backup into an image of a hard drive. As an image this allow you to replace a hard drive within the machine, boot to the Norton Ghost CD and restore the hard drive from the image. In this instance it restores all programs, settings, and information files exactly to where you had them. I have used this program for years as I have said and am very happy with the results. It has the option also to duplicate a hard drive. If you are near filling your 40 GB hard drive and purchase a new 120 GB drive rather than making it just additional storage you can use ghost to move everything just as it is to the new drive allowing to remain running one hard drive rather than having to maintain storage on separate drives and partitions. This newer version that is currently out allows you to burn your backup image to your CD or DVD burner directly from the Ghost software and restore a computer from an image on a network drive (booting from the CD).
This all assists in computer installation and rollout of new machines providing you have similar hardware in each machine. Install and configure the first system, create the image, and deploy it amongst the other machines.
This product comes highly recommended. It is well worth the investment.
Offtopic but, There is also a corporate version of Ghost that allows for multi-casting. This basically is installing Norton on a network server and broadcasting the image to multiple computers over the network at your every whim. |
