China: Cancel Obama Meeting With Dalai Lama

China urged the United States to immediately cancel plans for President Obama to meet with the Dalai Lama next week, warning the move could further hurt ties. Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu issued the remarks hours after Washington announced Obama would meet with the Tibetan spiritual leader at the White House on Feb. 18.

The Dalai Lama shocked the world of Buddhism when he announced that he was giving up his political powers as head of the Tibetan government in exile. Some analysts say the aging leader is beginning a risky strategy to preserve the spiritual leadership of Tibetan Buddhism in the event of his death.
