Sarkozy Should Retire, says France
The French Are Fighting For All Our Benefits
By Mark Weisbrot
French populist rage is being directed in a positive direction - unlike in the United States where it is most prominently being mobilised to elect political candidates who will do their best to increase the suffering of working- and middle-class citizens. Ref. Source 7
President Sarkozy has it right. The idea that a 35hr work week, which by the way actually means nearly 5 years less work by the time you retire from a 40hr work week, is sustainable with good retirement benefits to boot is pure folly. Add on to that the average 7wks of vacation and on top of that the official holidays and the french worker isnt working a whole lot versus the rest of us around the globe.
I put in about 60hrs per week on average. I will not be of normal retirment age until 67 and to be honest, I bet it is raises again at least once or twice befroe then. People are living longer now and while it is a nice idea that it just gets tacked on to retirement, the unfortunate part is that there isnt enough money for this to continue. We are in better health now then we were generations ago...that translates to being more productive.
For 22yr olds to take to the street in protest of something that will happen in their lives nearly 40 yrs later...please...it just seem like another day off to me.
I sure hope Mark Weisbrot didn't put any overtime in on that article...
