Partner, what kind of work you going to do in Trinidad that will bring you all the way here?
Hi Domesticated -- I work for an international consulting company that is contracting with one of the TT ministries. From what I'm told right now, it's about a 12-month gig. All things being equal, I'm really looking forward to spending more time in Trinidad. : )
Name: Les
Comments: I too will be taking a job in Trinidad early next year. I've been offered a job in the Arima area. I've read quite a lot about the crime and danger of living in Trinidad, and am curious as to how much of this goes on inland. Most of the reports I've read seem to happen in PoS (higher pop. density I know has something to do with that). Are there safer areas that I should be looking into for a residence? I have lived in major cities in N.A., as well as tiny villages, and have found safety is highly subject to a persons self-awareness and common sense.
Boisestate, I applaud your enthusiasm to live here in the year 2008. I am relieved that you are keeping yourself informed where the crime situation is concerned. I do not mean to scare or put a damper on your spirits but be very careful wherever you go! I believe that you are making excellent choices by trying to steer clear of being associated with "oil people." A wise choice because most Trinis regard foreigners as their main source of income. By disassociating yourself with "oil people," may prove to be a wise move because unscrupulous individuals here tend to alter their prices once they recognize that you are not a local.
I would suggest that you stick to renting an apartment and not "share" your abode with anyone, unless it is someone you know very well. Trust me, it is a lot safer that way! You may try perusing websites such as Century21: https://www.century21cycb.com/rrent1.htm The real estate agents are very friendly, helpful and very professional. I believe that you would be satisfied with the apartments, condominiums, townhouses that they may show you!
There are a lot of great dentists in Woodbrook area. I personally use a dentist in Chaguanas by the name of Dr Curtis Sealy, who owns "Advanced Dental Care," which is located in Chaguanas. If you need more details such as address or telephone number, please let me know. This particular dentist has the state of the art technology and prefers to stay abreast with the latest in surgery procedures and equipment etc.
Sailing club, you may find that in Chaguaramas area. I am not sure who to refer you to but I do know for a fact that they do a lot of sailing there.
For internet services, we have internet cafes almost everywhere in Trinidad. But if you wish to have your own internet service, you may wish to try Greendot, since they are more customer service oriented. FLOW has recently introduced internet and cable as part of their package deal, so you may wish to explore that option.
Carnival time, is considered "the greatest show on earth;" tourists love to flock to our shores during Carnival time since they feel so relaxed and they fall in love with the beauty of our women and costumes. Harts is a good band. I understand that Brian MacFarlane also has beautiful costumes too! You have a wide selection to choose from. You may wish to consider joining a band which has an all inclusive deal for example, I believe Harts and Poison offer this facility. You pay a certain amount of money and they provide you with a costume, free water, drinks and of course security! Something that is worth considering!
Good places to eat. Well these days we have a wide selection. Burger King, Popeyes, Long John Silver, Ruby Tuesdays, Tony Romas, TGIF, Woodford Cafe, Hotte Shoppe Roti and the list goes on and on. Maybe you should try the malls since they have great fast food places. For dining, JAFFA, Joseph's (Mediterranean food), Rafters (great sea food), Tamnak Thai (Thai cuisine) or Shanghai restaurant, Great Wall for Chinese cuisine. Or if you prefer to sample something local, try a bake and shark by Natalie's or Richards on Maracas beach.
Ok now for the night life. We have the infamous ZEN nightclub (I am sure you may remember the headlines with Akon), Pier 1, Liquid Nightclub and 51 degrees.
I hope you do enjoy yourself here at our shores! Do forget to take a dip at our beaches in Las Cuevas, Maracas beach, Tyrico bay and Toco. We also have nature resorts such as Asa Wright Centre, Lopinot and La Vega.
Thank you Geenie for your reply. I really appreciate the time you took to share those thoughts. A few of the places you mention I've actually already been (Joseph's, Zen, 51 degrees, Richard's) -- I even got to see One Republic last Thursday at Zen. Luckily it was a lot cleaner than Akon's show. I will be renting an apartment in Glencoe and am very happy with the price and location -- one bedroom so I'll be living alone.
I am looking for a church to attend -- perhaps someone more local than I could suggest a place? This board seems to be more geared toward LDS, but I'm more used to a Baptist (American, not shouter) style church. After extensive Googling for churches I've come up empty. Anywhere within reasonable driving distance in the greater Port of Spain would be okay. Any help anybody?
Thx!

Good luck on moving to Trinidad. What is the average wage there? I have heard it is $9 TT a hour which = about 80 pence in sterling per hour?
Is there a big print industry in Trinidad?
