JB I know little of Trinidad, but let us say one did not waste lead on people that one wished to be rid of, rope was reusable and cheap. (though one usually left the body to dangle as warning to others)
A lynching was not uncommon and is best represent by a noose. Now picture a person dressed in a white bed sheet coming to your afro-American door. So yes the noose is a pretty good threat from a white man to one that is black.
Perhaps because of my age I can recall many good fights on a certain hill in Owen Sound and nooses where found though never full thank goodness. Hard to think we are only one generation into tolerating those of different skin colour. Scary to me and I tell my son of these deeds because he can not understand the hatred he sees on TV.
The noose usually represented a criminal or square peg in society paying for not fitting in, that is how I see it. Based on that I can see why today there are those who will use it to symbolize whatever they take as not fitting in.
Yes the cross is the classic symbol for the triplets in KKK but black hatred far surpasses that crew. But just so you know I have not last my marbles on this one here is a good web site that explains it far better than I can.

Funny how movies never really pumped this one up but I guess a burning cross is more dramatic on the big screen.
