Troubleshooting Yahoo Messenger

I have many friends using Yahoo Messenger 8.1. Many of which are having a problem related to Messenger automatically shutting itself down and restarting for no reason.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I use both of these, but only keep Yahoo on all the time. I have put on Messenger at the same time, but experienced no problems. One tip you can use is to only give permission for the necessary and only view needed features... in other words turn off all the bells and whistles that hog resources and in most cases just open up your computer for peepers.

I have the exact same problem and I do not know the reason for it. I am connected to the net through a proxy, I wonder if this is related to the problem?

Messenger Yahoo Troubleshooting

Most of my friends with this issue aren't that savvy to use a proxy, (or to even know what one is). There must be a common thread in there somewhere, though.

Similar to using a proxy I have found that if your connection to the net is not totally direct then you may also have this issue. For instance using a hub DSL modem that works through a USB / RJ-45 cable can cause this. If one uses a direct connection then it is not likely to happen. Maybe Yahoo has a default ping that causes this on some networks.

I may have found the solution to our problem. Go to control panel->Add/Remove Programs...

Check to see if you have anything Yahoo! related installed, other than messenger. If so, uninstall everything but messenger. Close out of Messenger, then start it back up.

If you have programs installed that you must have, reinstall them one at a time - checking to see if the problem persists.

I walked a friend with the problem through these steps and she has been logged in since without error.

I hope this helps, hon.

So then I was right when I said:

Here is another tip - if you have something like Zone Alarm installed you can tell it which aspects of Yahoo you want it to start and which ones to block. For example: Yahoo updater exec file.

Sorry JB. I took it to mean that you thought I should shut down the plug-ins (internal options) within the Yahoo! Messenger program itself.

That is not what happened. If you don't take control of the install, Yahoo has taken it upon itself to bundle many (I think it is something like 5 or 6) individual programs together, all of which are installed at the same time. If you click "custom install" they do give you the option of deselecting things like yahoo toolbar, yahoo mail, etc.

These are the programs that I had my friend uninstall, and it has seemed to fix her problem.
