Humans always dream about faster computers that can communicate and solve problems in less time, however, to make them run at unbelievable speeds requires that current designs change. The question is... who will invent the ultimate chip architecture to change the way computers look and operate today?

New Architecture for Supercomputers -- Not Just For Scientists Anymore

While today's machines are amazingly fast number crunchers, many data-intensive applications are slowed because of the time it takes to simply access information from the memory chips. The Blue Gene/L design will run these applications much faster because the machine will be populated with data-chip cells optimized for data access. Each chip includes two processors: one for computing and one for communicating, and its own on-board memory. Each of the data-chip cells will work on a small part of a larger problem. This increase in data access speed will make a huge difference in the kinds of results these machines can produce and the kinds of problems they can solve.

The advance of chip architecture is definentely very cool and exciting for all us PC lovers. But the problem of bus speed will still plague the PC world for years to come. Chip speed is still faster as it is than bus speed, which is by far more important when it comes to data transfer and request speed.

While this article excites me, I think that the entire PC architecture is going to have to change in order to reach the speeds that man dreams about. The current design of motherboards is only going to go so far before we cannot go any further and we have to design something different.

New projects in the works in mere theory think tanks have come up with the idea of having fiber channel mother boards. Bus speeds would be phenomenal and be far faster than the chip speed. That would spark a true revolution in PC speed.
