I agree with Gothic, many people were persecuted simply because they had some kind of mental condition that the powers that be found to be not "normal" or acceptable.
But in some cultures the creativity of these people was seen as a great gift.

Devil Remove Gouged Eyes

Comments: This happens more than you think not the gouging of eyes but regular torture to people even children because some fanatic thinks they are possessed. These sick people doing the torturing are the ones tat have the devil in them!
