Gavage - Forced Feeding In Mauritania
I am watching on NG "Taboo" the culture of Gavage - Forced Feeding In Mauritania. The women are considered the most beautiful and desirable when they are obese or considerably overweight. Forced Feeding In Mauritania is such an ingrained part of the culture that they force feed little girls to the point of abusing them. They even use something called "zayar sticks" to get them to eat. Skinny girls are considered a shame and scandal for the family.

How strange, they try and make their woman fat. I have to say the image of someone beating a kid while forcing them to eat is pretty messed up. I mean what happens if the kid throws up. You can only keep in so mutch food before you vomit, poor kids. Some one needs to educate these folks on basic human rights, sheesh.
That's so animalistic! Where do they get off hurting children like that, the UN should be in there trying to get the laws change to protect the childen. Where is Mauritania anyways?

Comments: I can not get the image out of my head on the little girl on the show crying as she was forced to drink milk. There has to be something we can do. This is pure child abuse!

Comments: I am currently doing a in-depth research paper on this topic and since someone mentioned what happens if they vomit, well, the answer is they kept going. There have been a number of deaths from this force feeding practice called gavage. From gastric problems, vomiting choking issues, and acute pancritus. Sorry I know this is a fairly old post just wanted to chime in as I stumbled across this site. National geographic does have the episode on their site if you wish to learn more.

I think the problem will start from feeding as a baby, not as a child. I know of a case where a mother had issues with feeding her baby, and constantly fed the baby. The minute the babies bottle was empty, it would be filled again and fed to the baby.Resulting in a really obese baby, as the baby didn't know when to stop, because her stomach was expanding and thus creating a vicious circle of need.
I think this will be the case in this country, it will be accepted as 'normal' to continuously feed.
I dread to think what health problems are suffered later on in life though.
Check the video archive for more on this silly tradition that is a root of child abuse:

Comments: Kids are being force fed in Mauritania is one of the cruelest child abuse on earth. How can we stand to see such happening before our eyes and doing nothing? I wonder if Child Abuse Prevention Association has ever stepped out to help those poor girls. It's utmost tragic a stupid mother to treat her child that way. As a human being, we should all speak out and try to stop that barbarian tradition "immediately".
