Solid Paint or Varnish Wood?

Is it better to paint wood in your home with a solid color or varnish?

Personally, I don't like dark wood, so I would next look to varnish light wood, as I think that light wood varnished looks lovely.

Other than this, I would paint the wood, but I would only ever paint wood white, as to my mind this looks clean, light and hygienic!

I am with you on this one DianeC. It really depends on the kind of wood. Actually, I was recently given a tip that one can add a hint of varnish (color of your choosing) to normal polyurethane in order to both give the gloss as well as tan the wood.

Of course if the wood of itself does not have a good pattern then painting it may not be optional. However, I might use an off white color rather than flat white, because dust tends to show up quickly.

I usually tend to stain and varnish. If grain is not the best I will tend to a very dark stain if location is acceptable to it. I have painted wood but the colour varied according to where it is located. IE baseboards from lap joint pine used ice white. Bathroom walls and ceiling were done in wanescotting so I painted it white on ceiling and a light blue grey on walls and with an ocean scheme.
