Music Writing?

I love to write music. It is one of my favorite past times... But I am stuck!

I'm writing a piece for a friend who's heart is broken over this guy, you know where it's going.... And I just can't find any inspiration. Oh well, I'll keep trying.

What do you guys do when you get writer's block?

Writing Music

I also love to write songs, and I find that inspiration only strikes when I am not having an easy time. I tend to get depressed, but depression is actually a great seed for song lyrics. Most of my songs are quite positive - the messages of which I hope to be convinced, perhaps?

Anyway, other writer's block suggestions:
-Pick a random name from the phone book, and create a mental image and a story about what that person is doing right now.
-Start with a concrete object, then work toward the abstract. So many times, we want to write a song about LOVE or DESPAIR or FAITH or any other vague subject. Why not write songs about newsprint, or glass cleaner, or spoons? Objects give a song a concrete mental image to anchor the abstract concepts the song discusses.
-Set a timer for 25 minutes, and write. Follow the rules: you cannot stop writing within that time, even if you end up telling your life story or combining random words, or reminiscing on your grandmother's childhood. It doesn't matter what you write, as long as your pen keeps moving. From these 'flow of consciousness' writing sessions, I usually discover many things I didn't realize were in my mind. Then I can take those ideas and fashion them into the form I want, whether a song, a poem, a short story, or a rant on a message board.
-Read a page of the dictionary each day. It improves vocabulary, and the new and exciting words may just inspire a thought or feeling that turns into a song.
