I am going to place a patio seating area I have a fair bit of slate stone I can use. I am wanting to keep the area as cool as I can while making it easier to look after. That si I am not interested grass between the stone. I have been thinking stone dust.
I am debating if I should place 1/4" gravel under it then black underlay then the stone dust and the stone scattered through it.
Question is can I just lay the back cover and sand stone with the stone scattered through it. I have also debated using sand then the cover and stone dust and scattered stones. I do really wish to keep it as cool as possible.
In future a permanent roof cover will be made. Monies is an issue to keep it to a minimum.
Also what would any recommend for an edging it will be bordered by the house, two flower beds and grass.
Any thought are appreciated.
Make sure you dig the sod out and place some under layment down so you do not get weeds coming through. I would place a layer of sand down to keep the stones in the places you would like them then add a your smaller rocks to go between the bigger stones with the dust helping hold everything in place. A random placement of the bigger stones would look the best I think. This should make a nice place to just sit and watch the hours drift by. I would use a think black plastic edging strip between all of this and the house to help protect the foundation. On the outside you can use some Green wood and make a narrow raised flower bed/planter to edge the outside. A few pavers under this can make mowing easier too. Hope that helps some.
One concern here is water run but I was thinking of putting a half drain tile under the lowest side and burry it under the grass to let the stoned area drain better. Just to ensure no mold build up. Though I am not sure that is an issue with sand bottom and stone and stone dust topping. Would dry quick I would think.
The earth is 80 % clay so it will run to lowest part in a rain. Instead of plastic I have been debating cedar untreated (do not wish to poison kids pet). I might use treated though just because it lasts so much longer especially on the flower bed/patio garden.
Do you think it will be too hot to walk on with our shade one it though? the stones I mean. To ensure this did not happen I debated just putting it on the clay with the black barrier, Hard to level that way though. I will use a string level for this.
When you dig a little down to prepare the surface this is when you level it out with a level so you have good drainage away from the house and into the yard. The under layment is a special fabric that will keep weeds from popping up. This is safe for pets I believe. It is not something that should show. THe plastic trim can be replaced with a cedar or green board. Either one will give you about 20 years of life without treatment.
With a little bit of shade the rocks should not be very hot. In the hottest part of the day when the sun is hitting the stones to most they may get warm. The sand and the clay underneath should help absorb some of that heat. It should remain warm into evening too. If done right it will drain and dry quickly and give you many years of enjoyment.
Thanks sort of confirm my thoughts. being from the country we never did this stuff just through a bug net out and was happy not being carried away.
So my plan then is too keep the grade I have (sloped away from house) just level with sand use 4x4 on front to hold back sand and toss in rocks. I am sure my wife will be kind enough to tell me no no more here not there. Back fill with stone dust. give level sit area and drain. Will put drainage under 4x4 though as grass like the water.
Soon as that is down I can hear it oh wont a gazebo look nice. Well I have to build a new shed so I will get my cousin to cut some extra cedar and build one most likely 12x12. Beat that sun also.
You can have it close to level on the top it is the underside you want the slope to be away from the house. If your going to put a drain in slope it all to the drain but you will not have to put a drain in let it seep into the grass next to the patio.
You said it. Get some lawn furniture and a table so she can enjoy sitting out there. You will have to place the bigger stones to her liking there is not way around that. But you may get by without the gazebo if you buy her one of those nice gliders. BUt who knows.
I am currently building my wife a patio with 18 inch pavers of red and black mixed. I need to finish moving dirt around so I can start to level it out. Then get the fabric and sand down to start placing the pavers. Once that is done I will work sand into the cracks between the pavers so they do not move. I plan to put two patio chairs with a glass table out there for us to sit on and watch the neighbors and cars go by. She wants a glider too but I am not sure it will fit on my patio. I plan to put some raised flower beds around mine as well.
