Eugene Merle Shoemaker (or Gene Shoemaker) (April 28, 1928 - July 18, 1997) was one of the founders of the fields of planetary science and is best known for co-discovering the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn Shoemaker and David Levy. |
Its been over ten years since shoemaker-levy hit Jupiter, but the images are still amazing! Here is a great site showing the impact this comet, or rather its fragments made hitting jupiter in 1994. Eugene Shoemaker died just three years after seeing is comet his the planet.
